Show Navy Department Sponsers I AH Forms of Athletics (Amateur athletics throughout the entire country are being criticised with no little force and with such apparent ap-parent logic and truth that one begins to wonder whether or not the organization organ-ization as a whele is as sound as it pretends to be. It is claimed that amateus are commercialized and that th athletes in tin many colleges have turned professionals. If there is any foundation for the numerous charges, the amateur association asso-ciation would undoubtedly profit immeasurably im-measurably by studying the methods of the United States Navy in conducting conduc-ting its athletic events and in furnishing furnish-ing recreation for the sailors. The system is not on:y a model organization, organiza-tion, but it is amateur in every way, and a number of famous athletes have been produced. The Navy Department sponsors all forms of athletics, but only where amateur rules are rigidly enforced. The Navy fleet's football, basketball, baseball, tracK and boat race schedules, sched-ules, and tennis, boxing, wrestling and golf tournaments are conducted on such a systematic basis that thev all have a large following, consisting of not only Navy personnel, but of the civilian class all along both seaboards. sea-boards. An outstanding example of the interest in-terest which Che public takes in these events is founa in the boat races held on Lake Washington on August 9th. A crowd of 75.000 persons watched the U. S. S. Colorado pull to a victory and set two course records in so doing, perfect weather aiding it considerably. The Colorado's time was 15:09 for the two mile course. The Idaho was second sec-ond and the other entrants finished in the following order: Mississippi, Tennessee, Maryland, New Mexico, California and West Virginia. Rowing a steady 32 for the first spurt, the Colorado's raceboat crew on Thursday won for the second consecutive con-secutive time the Lake Washington two mile race. A record time of 15:-09 15:-09 for the course was set by the Colorado Colo-rado aggregation. Rooting boats followed the race and yachts flying flags of the Admirals Ad-mirals present coursed in the wake of the speeding racing cutters. The winning crew in the race was probably the youngest lineup in manv seasons. Eleven oarsmen were under un-der twenty years of age, and only one had passed the twentieth milestone |
