Stott visited the farm of Amasa Rasmussen at Fairview and begun the harvesting of the cereal variety wheat plats, which are lo- cated there. The grain is looking very good. There are nine varieties of wheat planted with Federation ns a check, four of oats with Swedish Select as a check, and four varieties of barley with Trebi as a check. Most of the varieties in check have been obtained by crossing some of the commonly com-monly grown varieties and are showing show-ing up well. The object of the tests is to develop new strains by uniting desirable characteristics into one plant. A trip was also made into the lower Gooseberry Valley on the mountain east of Fairview where Mr. Rasmussen Rasmus-sen has a field of head lettuce. The plants are growing well and are thrif-"y thrif-"y and healthy with heads just be-Tinning be-Tinning to form. A pest known as Wire-worms was destroying a part of the crop for wnich it was recommended recommend-ed that Carbon bisulphide be used as a control method by treating the individual indi-vidual infected plans. This lettuce s being grown at an elevation of eight thousand five hundred feet. If this experiment proves profitable there are hundreds of acres of mountain lands that can be used for the same purpose. |
