Another statue that has been conveyed con-veyed by sea and landed safely In Rome Is the great equestrian one of the famous General Colleonl. which stood on its lofty Medestnl In the Cam-po Cam-po of SS. Giovanni e Paolo. Rnskln says of It: "I do not believe there Is a more glorious work of sculpture existing ex-isting In the world." This statue Is, of course, of bronze, and was mdM-eled mdM-eled by the Florentine sculptor and painter Andrea Verrocchlo In 1481, assisted as-sisted by his more famous pupil, Leonardo Leon-ardo dn Vinci, Rev. Alexander Robertson Rob-ertson writes In the Christian Herald. After Verrocchlo's denlh. It was cast In bronze by Leopardl. There Is a story told to the effect that when Leopardl had finished his work, he quarreled with the republic over It. As he could not cnnie to a settlement, he knocked off Hie horse's head and escaped to Florence. The republic ordered him to return, but he refund, saying: "I have knocked off the horse's hend. It Is true, but I can put It on anln; but If I come to Venice and you take off my hend, you could not put It on nenln."
