Show DRIVER EDUCATION PROGRAMS URGED THROUGHOUT STATE Considerable impetus has been given the expansion of automobile driver education programs in high schools of the nation, through a series of annual state awards just announced by the National Conservation Con-servation Bureau, nation-wide accident ac-cident prevention organization. Purpose of the new awards is to recognize the work being done by state educational and motor vehicle ve-hicle departments, and the efforts of non-official organizations In the promotion of driver education. Plaques and certificates will be presented annually to each state which attains recommended standards stan-dards in the maintenance and expansion ex-pansion of safe-driving courses for youths who have reached, or shall soon reach, legal driving age, according ac-cording to the bureau's announcement. announce-ment. Three Awards Described Three types of awards will be given. They are: 1. Meritorious Award to each state having a full course in driver education in 25 per cent of its secondary schools public, private and parochial and having enrolled en-rolled therein not less than 25 per cent of the eligible students. 2. Superior Award to each state having a full course in 50 per cent of its secondary schools arid having enrolled therein not less than 50 per cent of the eligible students. 3. Award for Excellency of Achievement to each state for achievements attained in the development de-velopment of a comprehensive, state-wide high school driver education program. This special award will be made at the discretion dis-cretion of the judges, and will be based upon program developments including such factors as preparation prepar-ation of teachers, percentage of annual increase of schools teaching teach-ing driver education, percentage of annual increase of enrollment in the courses, colleges offering credit courses, delegation of responsibility re-sponsibility for cooperative programs pro-grams to responsible state agencies, agen-cies, and maintenance of accident records of graduates of courses. Announcement of the winners of the awards will be made June 1 of each year. The awards for each state will be made to its governor at the close of the academic year. State Official Contacted The National Conservation bu. reau, which is a division of the Association of Casualty and Surety Sure-ty companies, has contacted all governors and state officials concerned con-cerned with highways, education and safety, explaining the new awards. Each governor warf requested re-quested to appoint an appropriate official or officials to coordinate the reporting of driver education activities .'for his state. The stati-s have been supplied with simplified simpli-fied reporting forms, which designated desig-nated state officials can use to compile information concerning the achievements in driver education educa-tion in their Jurisdiction. Another form also supplied, will be used to report the completed statistics and Information to the National Conservation bureau and the judges. |
