State Road commission was surveyed sur-veyed this week by members oi the city council. A total of 522,311.67 has been expended to date on the program, pro-gram, according to figures pro vided by Harold P. Hansen, cit recorder. The money has been furnished in approximately the following sums by the following agencies: S5,000, Mt. Pleasant city; 85,000, Sanpete, county; 811,000, State of Utah, and $500 each, Pleasant Creek and Twin Creek irrigation companies. Of the 85,000 contributed tc the flood control program by Mi Pleasant only $3S6.00 was actual city funds, Mayor G. B. Madsen declared. Part of the city's share was made up of B and C road funds which are received from the license li-cense plate fees. Revenue from this source amounted to $2,-S10.00. $2,-S10.00. Credit for trucks and la-jeo.i la-jeo.i aiejs aiu oj panspujnj joq commission-directed project was responsible for $1,S04, the mayor said, thus leaving a balance of S3S6 00 to be paid from cit funds in making up the town's $5,000 share of expenses. "Ordinarily," said Mayor Madsen, Mad-sen, "B and C road funds received re-ceived from the state would be applied locally to street improvement im-provement and curb and gutter work. However, it was necessarj to apply these funds to flood control and forego road improvements improve-ments temporarily because of the 'urgency of the flood problem. prob-lem. Actual construction accomplished accomp-lished by the program includes a dike across South Fork in Pleasant Creek canyon and a second dike at the mouth of the canyon. Raised five feet higher were the upper flood barriers and spillway at the mouth of the canyon and the lower flood barriers approximately one mile west of the upper barrier. Also part of the program was the cleaning of the main channel through Mt. Pleasant proper, Mayor Madsen explained. The new structures are designed de-signed to dissipate the force of Pleasant Creek by diverting it. A barrier has been raised to catch and hold debris which might otherwise block the channel chan-nel and the channel has been ! thoroughly cleared so that the j water will course through it I freely, the Mayor said. A rather unexpected addition-j addition-j al supply of water was developed for the city in the course of the flood program, he explained. It is located near Sulphur spring and can be used eventually for culinary purposes. It is presently present-ly being used to increase the city power output. It could not have been developed, Mayor Madsen said, had not equipment being used on the flood control program been available. Also because of the availability availabil-ity of proper equipment local civic clubs were able to begin construction of an amphitheater and recreation area west of the power plant. Overall direction of the flood control program has been carried car-ried out by L. M. Winsor, State Road commission engineer. |
