Show The Sword Must Fail! There is a lot of eye-wash in the current discussion of the "unconditional surrender" policy of the United States in regards to the war against Japan. The war was brought about by Japanese militarism, espousing espous-ing the principle that the sword could rule supreme. The essence of our present policy is that those who took to the sword shall renounce re-nounce it. The Japanese militarists set out to dominate the Far East by brute power, convinced that, if they failed, they could establish such force that the western world would negotiate a peace. Every line of propaganda that issues from Tokyo about the great cost of defeating Japan, etc. evidences evi-dences the faith of the militarists militar-ists that the sword will yet buy terms. Faced with this fanaticism, this faith in power of arms, it is essential that the present conflict con-flict absolutely break it, once and for all. The only way this can be accomplished, as we see it, is to compel the rabid militarists militar-ists of Japan to acknowledge the impotence of their weapons by abject and absolute surrender. It may be that it will cost more American lives, during the present pres-ent war, to implement the "unconditional "un-conditional surrender" policy but we do not believe, for a single moment, that it will cost more American lives, in the long run. This is another way of saying that by winning a conclusive victory now we Kill probably avoid the necessity of fighting another war. |
