Show "Nautical Novelties" October 27th will be observed throughcut the United States as "Navy Day" In commemoration of the birth of former President Theodore Theo-dore Roosevelt and the birth cf our modern Navy. Proclamations will be issued by the President, Governors and Mayors. Since the dawn of recorded history his-tory adventurous men have sailed the oceans, reaching out as time passed and navigation and ships developed', men cf the sea trans-foimed trans-foimed the unknown into the known. The annals of exploration, o. Ionization, commerce and civilization civil-ization are overwhelmingly a history his-tory of these who "go down! to the cea in ships and occupy their bu-iness in the great waters." In the records of achievement, the Navies of the world have had a large share. In cur own history, the United States Navy has had a real part in its development, whether whe-ther in war or peace. It is an ackncwledjjed fact that the Navy's errands cf mercy have saved more lives than its guns have ever destroyed. This has been ac-crmplishd ac-crmplishd by the rushing of medical med-ical attention, provisions and supplies sup-plies to stricken areas of floods, famine, fires and earthquakes. In national disasters, it has always been the Navy which has first otrered as ktance to the population popula-tion cf stricken areas. The function of the Navy Ls to maintain prace thnt mission is as fundamental with the Navy as it is with the prliceman on the beat.
