Ephraim is experiencing a similar event with the company plant at that place. It is turkey day every day afc Moroni if one should mention it to Ralph Blackham, business manager, man-ager, or E. F. Walters, Plant manager man-ager of the Moroni plant where turkey feathers and choice birds are seen in large numbers. Thera is no wonder they call it "turkey day." The marketing of the birds began be-gan on November 2nd at the Moroni Mo-roni plant according to Mr. Walters Wal-ters with an average run cf about 2500 birds through the plant each 8 hour shift, with the plant running run-ning two shifts per day. There were about 100 persons to the shift last week, and they were receiving re-ceiving from 25 to 45 cents per h ur according to the kind of work they were doing. During the present pres-ent week the company increased the shift to 150 people and were turning out about 3500 turkeys per shift, or 7,000 per day according to Mr. Walters. They expect to complete, com-plete, the packing of the birds by the middle of next week if all goes well with expectations at the plant. It is an interesting sight to see how beautiful the choice birds ccme out of the plant, already cleaned, cooled and packed, ready fcr shipment to distant markets in the very finest shape one could wish to see. The birds are cooled to 38 degrees artel put into a refrigerator re-frigerator car setting by the plant and then delivered to the New York markets or the San Francisco markets at about the same temperature. temp-erature. Most of the birds go ta the eastern market. Mr. Walters estimates that there will be 75,000 turkeys marketed through the plant at Moroni. There is a charge of 22 cents per bird to, run them through the plant. The average weight of the turkeys being be-ing dressed at the Moroni plant is 17 p:unds. With the present market mar-ket price and if the number of turkeys in this valley reaches 75.000 the growers in this section will receive approximately $380,-000.00. $380,-000.00. The Utah Poultry Producers Coop Co-op Association has four plants in Utah; one Is located at Moroni, one at Ephraim, one at American Fcrk and one at Salt aLke City. With $380,000 00 coming to "turkey groers in this part of the valley one can readily see that it is a most promising industry, and it is only in its infancy. |
