Show Vernal Boasts Big Street Paving Program The Little City with the Big Street Program. Vernal, in Uintah county, is fast achieving a reputation as one of the best paved cities to the west, through a Works Progress Administration Admin-istration road and street improve-rcer.t improve-rcer.t development which it has oponscred. Under the initial project, Vernal already has built three and a hall miles of sidewalk and eighteen bl.Tks of streets, using native rock asphalt as the building material. More than 1500 tons of native rock asphalt were used! in the program. pro-gram. The material was mined from a property four miles west of Vernal which, since the initial project was completed, has been! purchased by the city and is now the source of additional road building material. The native asphalt is prepared at a plant which has been constructed in the city limits, and five tens of sand are mixed with each ton of asphalt. The mixture Is hauled to the scene of operation and rolled into place with a heavy roller. The resultant surface is declared to be exceptionally fine for auto traveL Vernal 's main street, paved more than 15 years ago with the native asphalt is declared to be in as geed condition at present as it was when the street was originally Improved. Under an arrangement made by the city with previous owners of the asphalt mine, the property was worked by WPA labor, with the city paying a royalty of 10c a ton for each ton produced. Sand for the mixture was obtained at a min-' min-' imum of expenditure, through use of WPA labor, and the mixing 1 plant, consisting cf a steam heating apparatus and ' a mixer, also were constructed by WPA labor.
