Show Warning' Issued Against 'Civil Service Schools' Washington, D. C, March 8 The United States Civil Service Commission Com-mission today issued the following satement: ...The public should not be misled by promises of Government positions posi-tions by so-called "thai-service schools", their agents or their advertisement. ad-vertisement. No school is able to fulfill any such promises. The public is warned against schools cr agents that would lead one to believe be-lieve that they represent the Government Gov-ernment or are connected with the Government in any way, or that rive assurance of success in passing pass-ing civil-service examinations on the completion of their courses. Extravagant claims of this type are bringing some such schools under un-der Government investigation. Recently Rec-ently the Post Office Department issued fraud orders against a number num-ber of these" schools denying them further use of the mails after evidence evi-dence has been submitted that they had used the mails to defraud. In cue of these cases prosecuted by the Government, the promoters of the school were later tried in criminal crim-inal court and given jail sentences. The Federal Trade Commission al-s- investigates complaints. The aim of the Government is to peo'ect the public against misrep-osentation misrep-osentation by any of these schools. " t is of course impossible for the Government to secure or aid in securing se-curing the refund of money paid into the schools. The public is t'-'erefore urged to heed this warning warn-ing and to cooperate with the Government Gov-ernment by making inquiry in eve.y case concerning such claims by civil-service schools or agents before enrolling for courses. Caution is par.icularly made against claims by schools that their courses are required in Older to take the examinations of the U. S. Civil Service Commission; that they are given advance information regarding civil-service examinations; examina-tions; that they have influence aith the Federal Government to p.ocure employment for applicants; that they can secure special advantages advan-tages for those taking their courses; that they have been authorized by the Federal Government to give examinations. Such claims are false. Anyone can obtain civil-service information free from the Secre-ta Secre-ta y cf the U. S. Civil Service Board at any first or second-class post office cr from the office of the U. S. Civil Service Commission at Washington, D. C. Upcn request, the Commission will place a person's name upon a mailing list to- send him notice, without cost, of the next examination examina-tion held for any particular posi-ti:n posi-ti:n in which he is interested. The Ccmmission will furnish upon re-Iqwest re-Iqwest sample announcements of any ex3mination. |
