Show Letter to the Editor Dear Sir: I The unusual high rate of auto- , train accidents at crossings on the Union Pacific Railroad strip thru Lehi. American Fork, and Pleasant Pleas-ant Grove is alarming. The' are needless. Each of these cities and also the county has legal power to require automatic blinking vig-'.vag vig-'.vag red light and gong signals at each crossing. These automatic signals sig-nals would attract attention of automobile drivers in ample time to avoid collision, because they operate at least 200 yards before the train comes to the crossing. The old Revised Ordinances of these three cities contained laws regarding railroads passing thru them. The new Revised Ordinances Ordin-ances of 1950 do not contain anything any-thing with respect to operation of railroads through these towns nor anything with respect to warning signals at crossings. If the public could be aroused about this situation, I feel certain the railroads which are taking so many lives would be compelled to install blinking wig-wag lights and gongs at every crossing. The cost for such equipment is not comparable compar-able to the value of the lives already al-ready taken, and the injury and damage suffered by the local population. pop-ulation. We the people support the railroads rail-roads and they should use some of the money we pay them to protect our lives. As it is the people keep paying by death, scars, mutilation, muti-lation, and cripples, not to mention men-tion great pain, suffering, loss of time and property. The railroads keep making more money and keeping it all. All this happens because be-cause the cities give them a franchise. fran-chise. It is too costly. I write this letter with the hope that you may use it to call to the attention of the public this serious problem. Very truly yours, Don Mack Dalton, American Fork, Utah |
