Show f ' ; n t; t, a " ! . : ; r, ' ' J-f v,-? r,, 4 :, Playing rugged and inspired football, the Pleasant Grove Vikings Vi-kings rode into the Utah State Championship B-Finals last Thursday Thurs-day afternoon. The free ride was on the broad shoulders of Paul (the "Horse") Allen; and at the expense of the' highly-rated Millard Mill-ard Eagles from Fillmore, Utah. From the time the game opened at 1:30 p.m. until the gun barked for the end, there was little doubt in the minds of the 2,000 spectators specta-tors assembled that the Battle Creek boys were playing for keeps. The 21 to 0 score was only incidental. inci-dental. True the "Horse" scored all three Viking touchdowns; but that's only part of the story. The tackling and blocking of Ned Alger's lads was the best ever seen in Pleasant Grove; and shapes up with the sharpest ever seen in the state. It was a team victory, if there ever was one. In this connection we are reminded remin-ded of a remark once made by the late Knute Rockne, immortalized coach of the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame. It was during the days when the celebrated "Four Horsemen," Stuhldrerer, Layden, Miller and Crawley, were running roughshod over the best the American Amer-ican Colleges had to offer .Someone .Some-one remarked, after Notre Dame had won the National Championship Champion-ship for the second consecutive time, "Well Knute, you're certain- ly lucky to have those four "Horsemen." The wiley Rockne replied, re-plied, "Sure, but how far would they get if it weren't for my Seven Mules?" Not taking anything away from the "Horse" for his play was brilliant; bril-liant; but the Seven Mules on the line and the able assistance of Johnson, Lewis and Thornton in the backfield really made the Vikings Vik-ings gc. The Eagles threatened only once. It was the final play of the first half with Millard lads knocking knock-ing on the Viking door. A pass intended in-tended for Fred Davis was stolen away by Gene Carson for Pleasant Pleas-ant Grove on the one foot line. The timers gun ended the first half play. It was a bitter loss for Coach Taft Watts of the Millard squad. The Eagles outgained the Vikings as far as yardage was concerned; but the gains were largely registered regist-ered by line plays in the middle of the field. The vaunted pass offensive of-fensive of the Region IV champions champ-ions bogged dawn miserably. For the Vikings, it's on to Salt Lake City, come next Saturday. Ute Stadium is the locale for the Pleasant Grove - North Summit game; which carries with it the Utah High School B-Championship. Fcr the hundreds of local fans who will make the Saturday trek to the capitol city, we might advise ad-vise that the game is scheduled to begin at 12:00 noon. The Review goes along with nil residents of the Pleasant Grove area in offering congratulations to Coaches Ned Alger, Don Crump and their valiant Vikings. Ten wins in a row is no small accomplishment. ac-complishment. We heartily concur con-cur with the slogan of the Pleasant Pleas-ant Grove High School Student-body Student-body this week, "Beat North Summit." |
