Show Vikings Beat Bingham, Play Lincoln Tonight The I'leiisfiiit. Grove Vikings turned what seemed like rr-rtain defeat into plorious victory last Friday night, by a brilliant display cf last quart'-r football. It was just on." of those things that come occasionally y as the answer to a i coach's prayer. j With but eight minutes to go, the Vikings were fighting a losing battle with the score 14 to 7 in favor of the Bingham Miners. The Miners had the ball on a third down and elected to pass. That was the turning- point in the game. Jay Newman intercepted the flying fly-ing pigskin and carried the ball to the Bingham 40. Jay returned the interception about five yards With Allen, Lewis and Thornton alternately carrying the ball, the Vikings advanced to the Miners' 20. On the next play Thornton went over Center for the touchdown. touch-down. Score Bingham 14, Pleasant Pleas-ant Grove 13. Paul Anderson's at-temped at-temped place kick went wild. Pleasant Grove kicked off to Bingham and after a few futile line plays, the Miners again elected elect-ed to pass. It was Paul Anderson this time who hauled in the highflying high-flying ball for another intercepted play; which gave the Vikings possession pos-session again, and one more chance. It was Allen, Thornton, and Lewis once more up the field with drive plays. Thornton took the ball again on the Miners 22, and drove over center for the touchdown. touch-down. Anderson's place kick was good this time, making the score 19 to 14 in the Viking's favor. After the last score the PG boys were really "up" and threw the Bingham backs for several sizeable size-able losses, to end the game. In the opinion of Coach Ned Alger, the entire Pleasant Grove team played good pre-season ball. He mentioned especially linemen Trimble, Ostergaard, Anderson. Floyd Ash and Buckner. In the backfield Thornton, Johnson, and Allen looked best. Pleasant Grove plays again today to-day (Friday) when the Vikings travel to Orem for a practice tilt with the Lincoln Tigers. This game is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. League play opens at 7:00 September Sept-ember 23, with the Vikings meeting meet-ing the BY High Wildcats. This initial "play for keeps" encounter is scheduled under the lights at the local ball park .The game will mark the concluding event of Pleasant Grove's Community Fair. |
