Show Freedom Crusade To Start For Drive For Funds Directed by Birney K. Farns-worth, Farns-worth, prominent Salt Lake City businessman, Legionnaire and onetime one-time educator, the Beehive State has begun enlisting its forces in the Crusade for Freedom to support sup-port the radio networks American democracy is operating as its own voice to the big lie of Communism. The Crusade, backed by the voluntary vol-untary contributions of millions of patriotic Americans, sponsors Ara- erica's major independent weapons weap-ons in the psychological war against again-st the Kremlin's propaganda: Radio Ra-dio Free Europe and Radio Free Asia. Mr. Farnsworth, still setting up the campaign organization which is expected to carry the appeal into every nook and corner of Utah, pointed out also that the scope of those two radio networks and such allied operations as the "Winds For Freedom" balloon barrages bar-rages has steadily expanded in the two short, hard-working years of the Crusade's existence. "Radio Free Europe alone has grown froni a single small transmitter trans-mitter to a powerful network of 13 hard-hitting transmitters, beaming bea-ming over 1,000 hours per week of truth-telling programs to listeners behind the Iron Curtain. "The hearty response to these broadcasts," Mr. Farnsworth continued, con-tinued, "shown in thousands of let- ters mailed to the Crusade's Munich Mun-ich operations base under great risk to the senders, proves that the Freedom Story must continue to get across to the enemy camp over ov-er and over again. "These broadcasts are doing yeoman work in giving hope and encouragement to our freedom-loving freedom-loving friends in Stalin's captive countries. They are creating new friends of Freedom and they are playing havoc with the Communist Commun-ist plans of conquest and assimilation." assim-ilation." Nationally the Crusade is directed direc-ted by Henry Ford II, with Charles E. Wilson as national campaign chairman. Last year, said Mr. Farnsworth, some 200,000 patriotic Utahns joined in support of the Crusade. It is hoped that 300,000 this year will take advantage of the opportunity oppor-tunity to do their bit against the encroachments of Communism. Keynote of the 1952 appeal was sounded by Dr. Adam S. Bennion, Utah Power and Light Co., vice-president vice-president and widely-known Utah civic leader Addressing a Salt Lake City kickoff banquet, Mr. I Bennion warned that ''For Americans Ameri-cans to do nothing is to let Communism Com-munism overrun America it's as that trust and belief In God will lead to peace, but also depict numerous num-erous scenes of life in the Beehive Bee-hive state. Heading the picture parade on the "Freedomgrams" is one of, Utah's own ''Miss America" Miss Colleen Kay Hutchins, signing sign-ing her own Freedomgram message. Mr. Farnsworth said churches also have been enlisted in the campaign and have set Nov. 30th as "Crusade for Freedom" Sunday Sun-day on which services and prayers pray-ers will be directed toward continued con-tinued success of the Crusade in its effort toward world peace. On the effectiveness of the Crusade Cru-sade and the radio networks its sponsors, Dr. Bennion opined that "surely these peaceful methods offer of-fer America the best weapon it has yet attained toward building the intelligence and understanding that will conquer the world for peace." Among city leaders named to date are: Mrs. Thomas H. Morgan of Garfield; Leon Stucki of the Stucki Building Supplies Co., for Logan and Cache County, with Bordo M. Bodily assisting in Lew-iston; Lew-iston; Arlin R. Porter of Lehi; Robert M. Pollock of the American Linen Supply Co., for Ogden and Weber County, assisted by Lyman Pierce as assistant and Pay Pier-son Pier-son of the Pierson Advertising Agency as Ogden-Weber executive director. simple as that." For "four good reasons," he said, the Crusade is a vital part of today's scene in America. "It is necessary unless America wants to yield itself to a series of Koreas which would bleed this country stark white. "It is voluntary and by its voluntary vol-untary aspect is the best answer of democracy to the big lies and hatred of Communism. "It is a peaceful method and it is effective." The campaign also has been granted the endorsement of the Utah State Department of Public Pub-lic Instruction and because of this Utah's thousands of school children child-ren will be given the chance prior to the drive's close on December 15 of signing especially designed "Freedomgram" messages for eventual ev-entual arrival behind the Iron Curtain. Utah's novel "Freedom-gram" "Freedom-gram" messages which will be dropped behind the Iron Curtain by way of "Winds of Freedom" balloon barrages contain not only on-ly a message of good will and hope |
