Show Baiile Creek J Breeze BY K. B. Las Vegas, Nev The local plumbers recently indicted under the Sherman Anti-Trust act were sentenced last Tuesday. Federal Judge Foley really threw the book at the boys. The stiffest penalty $5,000 fine and six months in a federal reformatory went to Ralph H. Atsup, Clark County A. F. L. labor "boss." An enterprising reporter of the Las Vegas REVIEW-JOURNAL did a little research on the past criminal activities of Mr. Alsup since he arrived in town, and came up with the following: March 3, 1948 Registered with X - - - the local police department as an ex-convict. December 3, 1949 Arrested Arrest-ed for assault with intent to kill, in the lab-, lab-, or hall shoot-! shoot-! ing of fellow I unionist Ray Folsom. He is now awaiting trial on this charge under $10,000 bail. August 21, 1950 Arrested for assault and battery; carrying a concealed weapon ;and drawing a pistol on a local citizen. He awaits trial on this charge under $1,000 bond. February 21, 1951 Arrested by city police following a series of downtown brawls. Fined $150. July 28, 1951 Charged with a felony in connection with an auto accident on Boulder Highway. Trial set for November 29. July 28, 1951 Charged with drunken driving in the same accident. ac-cident. This charge will be heard by a jury on November 20. October 23, 1951 Found guilty of anti-trust charges by a federal court jury. November 6, 1951 Sentenced to six months in prison and fined $5,000. The fact that scoundrels of this type can direct . the activities of various labor groups, is ample evidence that there is something radically wrong with the labor setup. Labor unions have gone a long way in imprving working conditions condit-ions and raising wages for their members; but they are rapidly losing the respect and support of many citizens, due to the type of leadership that has muscled in on their affairs. You can't play with mud and stay clean. So long 'till Friday. |
