Show Cholera Outbreak Hits Utah County; USAC Experiment Station Confirms Hog Disease An outbreak of hog cholera in North Utah County, the first epidemic epi-demic of the vicious virus to strike the area in 15 years, has been confirmed by Dr. Wayne Binns at the USAC and the Branch Agricultural Experiment Station at Provo. According to Dr. P. V. , Christopherson, Pleas-ant Pleas-ant Grove veterinarian, diagnosis diag-nosis of the disease was confirmed con-firmed at Provo Tuesday on hogs owned by Gene Crofts, American Fork, and earlier on some of Crofts hogs at USAC by Dr. Binns. Dr. C. T. Jones, American, Fork veterinarian, has also confirmed the disease for which there is no cure unless vaccination of hogs takes place before the virus is in i the herd. Hardest hit by the cholera outbreak out-break is Mr. Crofts swine herd. To Wednesday morning he had lost 14 head, and expects to lose the remainder of the herd of 54 with the possible exception of 14 weaners that have been isolated. isola-ted. He estimated, that his loss would be approximately $2300. The disease seems to be centered cen-tered in the southeast part of American- Fork. Whether the area will be quarantined will be up to the state veterinarian, Drs. Jones and Christopherson said. The state, official has been notified of the outbreak, and it will be up to him to quarantine the area if he sees fit, they said. Other hog . raisers between American Fork and Pleasant Grove who have lost animals to the disease are John R. La-rabee, La-rabee, four; Pete Jensen, three; and M. T. Stoker, two. Doctors Jones and Christopherson Christoph-erson warned hog raisers of No. Utah County to have their herds vaccinated against the disease as soon as possible. The virus can be carried from place to place by cattle, by birds flying from yard to yard, and and even on the shoes of humans. hu-mans. However, the disease strikes only hogs. Dr. Jones also warned that fowl pox is sweeping North Utah county, and urged poultry raisers to take steps to keep their flocks free from the disease. |
