Show U.S.O. To Be Organized Saturday Night i , i A meeting will be held Saturday evening, at 8 o'clock at toe high school to organize a local committee com-mittee for the USO (United Service Serv-ice Organizations) . The general public pub-lic is Invited to come out and help select the permanent committee, who will direct the campaign to collect $453.50 from the people of Pleasant Grove, Manila and Linden. The USO nation-wide war fund is to provide a program of recreation, recrea-tion, friendship and spiritual values for . the soldiers, sailors, marines, nurses and defense workers. The representatives representa-tives were: Alroy Gillman, Linden; M. S. Christiansen of the third ward; Ezra Swenson of Manila ward; Harry Richards of the second sec-ond ward, and Karl Banks of the first ward. The USO was first suggested by government officials and leading citizens interested in public service, said Judge Turner explaining the background of the organization. Out of these suggestions, representatives of the service organizations which functioned during the last war met and incorporated into the USO. The US'O entered into a contract with the government under which the latter agreed to erect buildings and provide certain equipment in the communities near camps where large numbers of those in the service serv-ice were congregated. The USO agreed to conduct an annual campaign cam-paign for funds, supervise club houses and recreation grounds furnished fur-nished by the government. Maw is honorary hon-orary chairman of the Utah drive for 1942, with Earl J. Glade as acting act-ing state chairman. The USO launched its campaign work May 11. |
