Show Junior Police Discontinued As School Board Takes Action On Attorney General's Ruling i Junior traffic police and bus flagmen flag-men were discontinued in Alpine district this week, following a decision de-cision by the board of education that it could not assume the responsibility responsibili-ty attending the practice. Letters to principals and bus drivers, driv-ers, voiding any authority to appoint junior police or bus flagmen, and ordering the discontinuance of the practice, were sent out early this week by Superintendent D. R. Mitchell, following the board's decision. de-cision. The board's action was taken Tuesday night after a. copy of the opinion on the question was received re-ceived from Attorney General Joseph Chez. This opinion held that the appointment of the junior traffic officers was beyond the scope of authority given by state law to the school boards, and that members of the boards of education would be in- dividually responsible for accidents ! that might occur to junior police and flagmen on school buses. I Members of the board were of the I opinion that they could not assume such responsibility, and that the matter of providing traffic protection protec-tion for school children should be left to the cities, towns, or county. Superintendent Mitchell, in his letter to the principals and bus drivers, driv-ers, stated: "It would appear from the decision of the attorney general that these are distinctly functions of the city, town and county police officers, and I should assume that if the city, town or county police officers of-ficers are willing to assume the responsibility re-sponsibility of appointing the junior police and flagmen, this arrangement arrange-ment would be definitely within their powers." Superintendent Mitchell v also pointed out that the order discontinuing discon-tinuing the bus flagman "does not relieve the bus drivers of the responsibility re-sponsibility of stopping at the railroad rail-road crossings and checking carefully care-fully with reference to approaching traffic." o |
