Show City Officials Issue Orders To Collect Rates , By unanimous action of the city fathers who convened in regular session ses-sion last Saturday night, all persons using culinary city water, whose rates remain unpaid after July 15, 1933, shall be disconnected from the city mains. This ruling applies not only to those who are already delinquent de-linquent from the prior reading, but to those affected by the present reading. This action was necessitated by the condition existing whereby too many persons have taken advantage of the city's leniency in collection of water dues and the city treasury has been seriously affected. A group of delinquent water users were again present at the meeting Saturday night. Recorder Barrett pointed out during the discussion that ensued that the city attorney had been consulted relative to the advisability of a meter deposit ordinance or-dinance whereby an amount must be deposited in advance as payment of the water meter and as a safeguard to the city for uncollectable water rates. The attorney's opinion on this point was that such a requirement require-ment would be legal although there was no court decision to substantiate the same. However, it was the attorney's at-torney's belief, Mr. Barratt reported, that such an ordinance was unnecessary unneces-sary as the losses heretofore suffered suffer-ed by the city could be almost entirely en-tirely eliminated by the insistance of the council that the ordinance regarding re-garding culinary water be strictly complied with. According to this ordinance, found in section 703 of the city ordinance, if the bills as rendered are not paid within fifteen days after rendition, the water be turned off. Attorney Elsmore therefore there-fore recommended, said Recorder Barratt, that the city ordinance be strictly enforced to determine if such a course would not cure the evil existing at present. I Chief I. L. Pratt and Elijah Cliip-jman, Cliip-jman, representing the American I Fork fire department, met with the 'council with the request that the I city again pay the regular dues of the members of the department into the Utah State Firemen's Association for the present year. The amount of $31.50 was authorized in payment of the dues of the members. I Chief Pratt further reported that the pump on the Pleasant Grove I fire apparatus had been sent to the I factory for repairs and that city had 'made a request for our department : to stand by in case of fires in their (vicinity. The matter was given j lengthy discussion and finally was i referred to the Fire committee and the mayor for action, with the un-jderstanding un-jderstanding that our apparatus be released only when the need was jsuch as to warrant its use in Pleasant Pleas-ant Grove, and then only after ample am-ple protection had been assured our, city during such a call. ! Mr. John Dickerson reported that the road bridge on 1st South between be-tween 1st and 2nd East street was in need of repair. He also stated !that the foot bridge immediately j north of the road bridge was out of iline and dangerous to pedestrains. I The matter was referred to the street superintendent for immediate action. The reports of the various city j Officers for the month of June were I read and approved and the accom-Ipanying accom-Ipanying bills Were allowed, j Mayor Anderson reported Ulat the j committee liad visited the State Road commission and had produced ithe right-of-ways for the proposed : changes in the State highway and I had been assured that work on the I projects would be commenced im-I im-I mediately. I Several minor matters were referred refer-red to the city officers as follows: The condition of various points of the sidewalks and streets throughout the city was referred to the street superintendent for action, j Complaints relative to the conditions condi-tions of certain outhouses throughout through-out the city were referred to the Board of Health with power to act. The matter of topping trees in the city park was referred to the public property committee for attention. 1 |
