It was recently reported in the "New England Journal of Medicine" that healthy men who take one aspirin tablet every other day can cut their risk of having a heart attack by almost fifty percent. While it has been known for some time that aspirin can lessen the incidence of a second heart attack, this is the first time aspirin has been shown to stop a first attack. And although the recent study was conducted only in men, it is felt that women can also benefit from aspirin. In the vast majority of heart attacks, clots are responsible for blocking the flow of blood and oxygen to the heart. Aspirin prevents clot formation by preventing the accumulation of platelets - the clotting part of blood. Increases in sales of aspirin following the release of the report have been noted. Some authorities are cautious, however, and are calling for more studies. They want to be sure that taking aspirin on a routine basis is not associated with bleeding, strokes or other problems. We're sure to hear more about aspirin and heart attacks in the months to come.
