' . story for a change, a tishing j;Sypleasant Grove at its 1 Tlhall tell you what shall be led "The Legend of Battle V gS as passed on by Mt. Tim- CsSns that one day Sam Hilton his neighbors, the Gourleys, friuns and Bezzants, were talking Tut things and got to bragging ' Lt the fish they had caught. Lid Gourley said that he was i' night crawlers as big as baby .' how snakes to catch some beauties "' the waste ditch below town. The ' worms he said were caught while he t irri2ated at night, on on the oc-e oc-e Lion he had seen one ofthe crawlers kill a rattler in a fight. i Glen Bezzant reported that during the busy fruit season that he had little time to go fishing and that most days he would catch his limit by simply tying a small rock to a string and dangling it in the irrigation ditch as he would pick fruit. He added that he had trained his cats to carry the fish down to his wife, Luretha, so she could fry them up for dinner. Ben Adams chimed in, noting that the fish he had caught while irrigating were so large that it took a good horse to carry them up to the homestead where his wife would have to get all the boys to help lift the fish to the meat hooks they usually used when they had to slaughter a beef. He said that if the city didn't put a screen on the Battle Creek stream he was going to get after them because the fish were so thick they were clogging his furrows and he couldn't get the water to his fruit trees. It was then that Sam Hilton smiled and complimented his neighbors and asked David Gourley if he couldn't take some of those worms to school and teach them how to grab a fish so there wouldn't be any hooks lost. Gourley said that he didn't think the Board of Education would approve but he would look into it. It was then that Sam revealed his own secrets. He noted that he had little time while running the power plant at the mouth of Battle Creek Canyon to be fishing. However, he had caught a few of his own. (To be concluded next week) |
