PGHS water polo team places fourth in Arizona western regional tourney The Pleasant Grove High School water polo team returned from the Western Regional Water Polo Tournament held at Tucson, Ariz, on Monday night with the fourth place award. The three-day tournament was comprised of teams from high schools, aquatic clubs, and colleges players from Arizona, Utah and New Mexico. The Viking boys team did extremely well, according to Coach Kevin Dickerson. They won four games and lost only two. One of the two losses came to the University of Arizona college team. This was a late game and it had gotten dark. The referees were having problems keeping the game under control, the coach said. The teams were tied after the first quarter, 3-3, and down by one point at the half, 3-4. But as the pool got darker, the Vikings fell farther behind. The final score was 12-6. Coach Dickerson said they felt they did pretty well against a college team, considering PG only starts one senior, two juniors and four sophomores. Kelly Kortman put the first score on the board, and this was followed by Derrick Dickerson with three more, and Kevin with two goals. The highlight of the whole trip came on the last game. The Vikes were to play Amphi High School from Tucson. Last year this team beat PGHS pretty good, so they knew it would be a tough game. The Vikings got after them right from the start, and by the time the game ended the score was 8-1 in favor of PG. The boys also defeated Duke City from New Mexico and Skyline High School. The boys senior goalie, Vallen Blackburn, and junior holeman, Derrick Dickerson were named to the All-Tournament team. The scoring for the tournament was: Derrick Dickerson, 15 goals; Adam Rupper, nine goals; Kelly Kortman, six goals; Brandon Taylor, three goals; Ron Mayo, three goals; Marc Sanderson, Shane Lamb, Robert Greenland, and Vallen Blackburn each had one goal. The girls also had some tough competition. They defeated the team from Duke City. The scores for the games were Trade Mills and Lis Mattingson, three goals each; Janet Oertli and Cindy Ellis, two goals each. Donna Fugal had an exceptional tournament and won All-Tournament honors. The trip also included a bit of travel and sightseeing. After the games, the team went down to Nogales, Mexico. After spending a few hours across the border, they went to Las Vegas. They had plans to go to the Wet and Wild Water Park but the weather was too cold so they spent just a few hours looking around. The kids are really looking forward for-ward to next year since they will have been together for at least one more year. All those who did not play this year, but would like to play next year, should plan on being on the Pleasant Grove High School swim team, Coach Dickerson said. |
