The Lady Vikes lost two close games last week in the state girls tournament and finished the season with a 12-- 9 record. The sophs had a great year with a 16-- 2 record Lady Vikes lose in close game tournament, the Lady Vikes were edged by Tooele, 66-6- Johnson was the top scorer for PG against Uintah with 10 points, Fugal and Fisher had 9 each, Walker 4 and Measom 3. PG had 10 field goals and made 15 of 23 from the line while Uintah made 16 field goals and hit on 6 of 13 from the line. The Lady Vikes finished the season with a 12-- 9 record. Pleasant Grove bowed out of the Girls Basketball tourney Thursday with a heartbreaking 38-3- 5 overtime loss to Uintah. Against a team they h ad split with in league play, the Lady vikings found sophomore, Julie Zeilstra just too much to handle. The six foot two inch Uintah sophomore center scored 25 of her teams 38 points. Pleasant Grove opened in a 3 zone and after one quarter of play were trailing 11-- Coach Marie Bone then switched defenses and went to a with Cherylnn Johnson chasing Zeilstra. the strategy worked and by half-tim-e PG was on top 18-1- 6 in an uncharacteristic low scoring game for the Lady Vikes. Jayleen Walker gave the PG ladies the lead by drilling a pair of free throws with seconds left in the half. As Johnson pushed, bumped and worked to deny Zeilstra the ball, PG edged out to a 26-2- 3 lead after three quarters of play.' Baskets by Debbie Fisher and Lila Fugal paced PG's third quarter attack. Leading by four with 2:15 left in the game, the Lady Vikes took a shot that coaches say, "Oh no," if it misses and "way to go" if it goes in. "Oh no," was Coach Bones response as the Utes pulled down the rebound. Zeilstra cut the lead to a pair with a nice turn around jumper and on the other end, a turnover gave the Utes a chance to tie. Despite being surrounded by four Lady Vikings, Zeilstra knotted the score with another basket. With :03 seconds on the clock, a foul sent Uintah to the line for a e. Andy Crittons first shot missed and Erin Measom got the rebound and was promptly fouled. PG's five foot 10 inch sophomore went to the line with :01 on the clock but her shot kicked off the iron to send the game into overtime. LeRoy Maughan was voted Coach of the Year and Kent Larsen was presented the Arden Kitchen Award. American Fork slow pitch league to go county-wid-e The American Fork City Slow Pitch Softball League will go county-wid- e this summer in an effort to increase the number of teams participating in league play. Teams interested in signing up must do so before March 15 by contacting American Fork City Recreation Director Steve Bailey, or League President Mark . Grace, 756-834- The league entry fee is $265 if paid in advance, and teams can sign up for the league's state-wid- e tour-nament to be held July 16-1- Entry fee for the USSSA-sanctione- d tournament will be $65. if paid in advance. Otherwise, the fee will be $120. League play will begin at the end of April and go through August. The league play will be under the USSSA rules, which in-cludes national home run rule - that means only two players can hit home runs in any ball game. |
