Wearin' o' the green means tasty St. Patrick's Day recipes By KALYN SECKETAN St. Patrick's Day, the holiday that brings us a little closer to Ireland, is coming soon. Ireland is a green country and the color green, along with the three-leave- d shamrock, serves as holiday symbols. The Irish people love parades and the United Stales held their first St. Patrick's Day parade in New York City on March 17, 1776. It was led by a famous general, George Washington. The Irish wear a sprig of shamrock to commemorate the holiday and our own children insist on wearing green to school on the special day. The old rule states that if you fail to wear green you get pinched. Green decorations adorn the home, school and the downtown area. Special holiday treats feature green coloring or typical Irish foods such as potatoes, corn beef or lamb stew. Carry on the holiday tradition in your home by serving a St. Patrick's Day treal. Children love green pancakes to start out the day. Cut-ou- t shamrock frosted cookies are fun to make and serve as a holiday symbol. Recipes are given for other favorite foods.
