Show Pets should not be used for scientific experiments Editor: Utah has a law that mandates public shelters to turn over animals for experimental purposes. One major problem with this law is the total freehand that the research institutions have with the lives of these animals. Some facts about these experiments: ex-periments: All experimental animals die in the process - often cruel and excruciatingly ex-cruciatingly painful repetitive and unnecessary experimental deaths. Often the institutions involved will not release any comprehensive information regarding the intended purpose and the ultimate goal of the experiment. All of this is supported by our tax dollars! Something has to be done: Citizens need to petition the Utah legislature to change the law forcing for-cing animal shelters to sell animals for research. No one likes the thought of their pet ending up as a lab animal. Consumers need to boycott products from cosmetic and other companies that still use tests like the L.D. 50 test where animals are forced to ingest substances till they die. We need to pressure Congress to pass sterner accountability laws governing the humane treatment of experimental animals. Redundant and repetitive experiments as well as those serving no worthwhile purpose and experiments of marginal utility need to be mitigated. Stricter measures need to be taken to curb pet overpopulation. over-population. It is time for a change!
