Show Tri-Cities heads for state tourney By DEAN VON MEMMOTT Tri-Cities earned itself a trip to the American Legion's state baseball tournament last Friday when the team destroyed Helper 12-3 at American Fork's Rotary Park. The Carbon County team had a rough night in dealing with Jeff Harris' pitching. He gave up only three runs for the night. At the same time, he and his teammates hit the ball so well that Helper had to change pitchers three times. David Carlson set the tone of the night with a one-run single that placed Tri-Cities on the board first during the opening inning. Shaun Peters doubled in Carlson, then came home on Harris' homer. After Chris Hermansen scored on a passed ball, Helper third baseman Chad Bianco threw to first to mow down Scott Jensen for the third out. After Harris struck out Greg Van Wagoner and Kirk Reid in the top of the second, Dave Hreinser and Brian Finn came home on passed balls, cutting the lead to 5-2. Tri-Cities' Tri-Cities' Jeff Frier came home on a passed ball, and a two-run homer by Peters sent the game on its way to being one-sided. The game turned into a farce in the third as Donnie Young and Harris each batted in two runs. Those players' hits sealed Helper's last chance of winning. While the Helper gang continued to put men on base, the squad could not pick up additional runs until the top of the fifth when Bianco scored on an error at third. The game was called after the fifth because of a nine-run rule. |
