Show Carter statements mislead Editor: Let me begin by saying that I have worked with Scott Carter for over five of his seven years with the Utah County Sheriff's Department, most of this time as his supervisor. I have the highest respect for him and the job he has done. Over the last few weeks there have been several articles in the paper concerning con-cerning his recent transfer from Detective Division to Patrol Division. I am concerned about several misleading statements that have been made by Scott and some of his supporters. They have raised four issues that I feel need to be clarified prior to the Aug. 19 election. elec-tion. 1. The statement that Scott's transfer was a demotion. The transfer was a lateral transfer and not a demotion in anyway. He lost neither money nor job grade. 2. "The transfer would not save the department any money." Because of the addition of Scott to patrol we have already saved hundreds of dollars in overtime and we will continue to save money on a regular basis. The additional man has allowed the patrol supervision to cover shift shortages with non- overtime personnel. 3. The statement was matde that two other detectives were junior to Scott in department seniority. This is a true, but very misleading statement. The two detectives both have special skills and job assignments which Scott is not qualified to perform. 4. As for the statement that the real reason for the transfer was to restrict Scott's ability to campaign for the office of sheriff. I think it's very important to point out that since Scott was transferred he has asked for and has been granted every Saturday off from the time of the transfer to election day. It should also be pointed out that the only way his request could be granted was for the Patrol Lieutenant and Sheriff Dave Bateman himself to volunteer to work to cover Scott's shifts. Neither one of these men will receive any monetary gain for this work. Are-these Are-these the actions of a man trying to hinder his opponent's ability to campaign? I think not. -Jay Colledge Patrol Sergeant Utah County Sheriff's Office |
