Show Review - Wednesday, August 6, 1986 - Page 7 Farm Bureau's Cookout King Contest during County Fair til & 'S ffl & pj J?K !b ' ' ' - ' - . .,x:a - 1 Local backyard barbecue experts should fire up their grills and get in practice for the county Farm Bureau's Cookout King Contest, according to Jim Smith, cchairman. The competition is scheduled to take place on Saturday, Aug. 16, at the Spanish Fork Fairgrounds at 1 p.m. The contestants are judged on their cooking ability in one of five categories: beef, lamb, pork, poultry and Dutch oven - as well as showmanship. Winners in each category, as well as the Cookout King and showmanship winnpr will be eligible to compete in the state contest Sept. 6 at the Utah State Fair. Every male 16 years of age and over (except for employees of the Utah Farm Bureau and affiliated companies) is eligible to participate in the county contest. Smith pointed out that entrants don't have to be expert chefs, if they have one recipe that produces good results. It also Is and awards, entry deadlines, and other important information for exhibitors. Because of the high costs of printing and mailing, people requesting a premium book through the maik are being asked to donate two dollars toward those costs; people picking up books at the state fair office are asked for a $1 donation. The office is located at 155 North 1000 West, Salt Lake City, Utah 84116. Cash prizes, ribbons, plaques, trophies and other awards are available in a variety of livesetock categories, including beef cattle, dairy cattle, goats, swine, sheep, poultry, pigeons and rabbits. Horse shows will also be held almost daily during the fair. Plant categories will include flowers, horticulture and farm crops. Fine arts displays will feature painting, sculpture, jewelry and other media. State Fair music competition is held in downtown Salt Lake City and at the University of Utah during the 11-d- event. The photography division will be ex-panded this year, .Mrs. Busby said. Home arts categories will also offer wide variety, including can-ning, baking, needlework, home handicrafts and others. A separate crafts division offers prizes in leatherwork, metal work, dolls, needlework and several other categories. County booth competition in the Horticulture building draws heavy interest from fairgoers, according to Mrs. Busby. Those displays feature the main agricultural, in-dustrial and recreational aspects of each county's economy. Besides thousands of educational exhibits in the above division, the fair will feature hundreds of commercial exhibits. An all-st-lineup of entertainers, continuous entertainment on two other stages, the clean B & B midway, and a wide choice of food varieties will add fun to the fair, Mrs. Busby explained. The event will begin at 10:00 a.m. with a grand procession through downtown Payson and to the city's shady Memorial Park. Upon arrival, the attending bagpipe bands will join the clans, athletes, dancers, and the Payson High School Band in a Mass Bands ceremony. The honorary Chieftan, Jim Ferguson, will of-ficially open the 1986 festival and from that point, the day's schedule will include an array of activities: There will be an area of the park designated especially for children's games, sponsored by the Payson Kiwanis Club. Scottish dance competition will be judged by the renowned Betty Lawrence, a native scot and current resident of Oklahoma. Various bagpipe bands from, throughout Utah will perform , theiry competition sets. Monte v Morgan will judge the stately Drum Major competition wherein con-testants are subject to a strick uniform inspection, followed by scored evaluation of their marching form and mace flourishes. Athletic events for men and womena re planned to inlcude the caber toss, hammer throw, putting of the stone, and the sheaf, rolling pin and fry-pa- n tosses. While wandering through the park to watch various events, you'll want to stop at the many booths and displays to get a taste of authentic Scottish food and an appreciation for the creative arts and crafts offered. For those interested in making a day of it, breakfast will be served from 8 - 11 a.m. at the festival concession booth. Lunch and snack foods will then be offered throughout the day.
