He urged the students to reach Heir goals but, he added, that it takes lots of hard work and overc-oming obstacles that get in the way. He recounted an experience with Tug McGraw, a great lefthanded pitcher of the 1970's. He said it was his first day of spring training in the t major leagues. Because he wanted it to make a good impression and not iu miss out on anything he had come to ;i He ball park very early. As he and a young lefthanded c pilcher walked out to practice they r; saw that Tug was already out ii arming up. Hard work is required to keep your job as a professional baseball player, even though it might look easy, and hard work is required to reach your goals in life, Dane pointed out. The students were able to ask Dane questions and they each received a certificate for their participation in the 7-- goal project. The ball player signed autographs for all those who wanted one. Refreshments were served, in-cluding donated by the Birrell Lady basketballers take to the court With four returning starters and seven returning lettermen, the Lady Vikings of Pleasant Grove are looking forward to the upcoming season with high expectations. Returning lettermen include seniors, Debbie Fisher, Lila Fugal and Cherylnn Johnson; juniors, Michelle Johnson, Leslie Tobler, Jayleen Walker and Kim Woffinden will form the heart of the Lady Vikings. A very talented sophomore group including Lisa Eastman, Tracy Koler, Christine Larsen, Erin Measom, Rhonda Simmons, Hope Smith, Kim Southam, Jeana Starr and Kirsten VanDyke, will give the Lady Vikings a strong supporting cast. The roster shows a very young team with three seniors, four juniors and nine sophomores. The seniors will be asked to provide the team leadership since they formed the heart of last year's team which finished 10-1- 0 and made their first appearance in the state playoffs in 10 years. This year they will be looking to improve on the overall team record and place higher in the state tournament. Schedule Dec. 3 Jordan at P.G. Surprises develop as hoop men begin league play The 1985-8- 6 Men's Basketball Program in Pleasant Grove started off with a bang as players worked out the kinks from spring and summer lay-of- f. If the first night's results are any indication the 1985-8- 6 season should provide some excellent basketball and a number of surprises. The first big surprise occurred in the third game of the evening with SAVEAK dropping one of the pre-season favorites, the Kinsmen, 65-5- SAVEAK was led by Brent Peterson with 23 points. However, high scoring for the game was Colby Adamson with 25 and backed up with 18 from Kaylyn Whiteley. Steve Peterson Interiors jumped off to a big start with a 74 to 48 victory over the young Story Pharmacy team. Petersons was led by Justin Bone with 22, while every member of the team scored and contributed to the effort. In a losing cause, Kevin Allridge scored 25 and Brady Harris had 8. The game was close up until the fourth quarter when Petersons used their experience to break out from the 44-3- 3 third quarter score to forge the victory. SouthamWarburton Aluminum scored an impressive victory over Interstate Transmissions, another n favorite, 64 to 45. Both teams played extremely well considering it was the first night of the league. Interstate was a little bit cold at the hoop but should come together in the next several games. Mark Atwood had the hot hand with 19 points to lead the SouthamWarburton team and Scott Fairbanks scored 14. Kyle Tolman led Interstate with 16 while Gordy Smith had 11. Games are played at the high school boys gym on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday evenings. Boys in these two divisions of play may come into the program in two ways. They can register as teams with their own coach. These teams should have a minimum of six players and a maximum of 10 players. They can be all of one grade or a combination between the ninth and 10th grades or 11th and 12th grades. If sufficient teams register we will have our own league in Pleasant Grove. However, if an insufficient number of teams come in we will play in the American Fork leagues as we did last year, with teams playing in both American Fork and at our own Recreation Center. Questions and help can be given by contacting the Pleasant Grove Recreation Office or by contacting Bill Hoglund. Those boys who are not affiliated with a team and wish to play, can register as individuals and then on Dec. 5 at 6 p.m. they will be formed into teams. It is necessary for all boys to register in order to become in-volved. All boys registering will be placed on a team.
