Show PL Grove girls take state By MARY COONS Pleasant Grove's 12 and under girl's team, PMI, took first place in the state tournament this past weekend, ensuring them an automatic berth in the national tournament in St. Louis, Mo. Aug. 1. PMI played some tough teams from all over the state, beating Murray, West Valley and Sandy. They played Sandy twice, including the championship game, winning in the high-scoring game, 24 to 22. In that game, the first three batters - Eva Walker, Val Nickell and Heather Johnsen all got on base, with Eva hitting a triple. Then Mary Hill got up to bat and with a one and one count, hit the ball over the fence, getting a home run. Julie Wilde came up to bat next, hitting a double, and stealing her way the rest of the way home. In the fifth inning, Liz Coons hit a nice hit into right field and got a triple. The game wasn't yet over. Sandy had a great second inning, scoring eight runs off PMI. PMI then tightened their defense and held Sandy runless during the fourth and fifth innings. Erin Zimmerman, the pitcher for Sandy, had pitched almost the entire tournament and was suffering from a strained back. But she continued to throw the entire game and was congratulated by the players on the PMI team for toughing it out. In the game against Murray, Hillary West hit a home run, and brought in two others on base with her. Kelly Francom had a great defensive game against Murray, making one throw to first base while sitting on the ground! Andrea Hilton made some great catches in left field, as well as Jenny Murphy in right field. Other members of the team included in-cluded Natalie Huntsman, Savannah Kindle, Shani Anderson and Cherilyn Knuteson. All of the team made some great plays and had the benches full of Pleasant Grove fans standing and cheering. The team and their parents would like to thank all of those that have supported the team, including team sponsor Dave Anderson. The team will be having some fund-raisers to help the girls get back to St. Louis, including selling tickets on a chance to win an Apple II computer and a rifle. Anyone wishing to contribute needs to call coaches Ken Nickell, Jeff Johnsen or Ken Kindle. |
