The 1984-85 seventh and eighth grade Utah County Jr. Jazz program came to a successful conclusion last Friday evening at the Pleasant Grove Community Center where Pleasant Grove hosted the first Utah County seventh and eighth grade Jr. Jazz Tournament. Pleasant Grove had two teams in the tournament, the Spirits and the Jazz, that represented the local league. Fourteen teams from throughout the valley represented communities from Payson to Lehi. The Jazz ran into one of the finest young player performances the first night of the tournament as they fell to Spanish Fork No. 1 team, 59 to 4G. Reid from Spanish Fork made an astonishing 36 points in that game. In the Division Tournament, the Spirits from Pleasant Grove just missed representing Utah County at the Salt Palace as they fell to a fine Provo No. 1 team, 41 to 37. The loss represented the first loss for the Spirit team this season. It looked like in the championship game that the Spirits were in for an easy night of it as they jumped out to a 10 to 4 first quarter score. However, the Provo team repeated their performance the night before in the semi-finals as they whipped the Spanish Fork No. 1 team, by overcoming a slow start, and tying the game when Jeff Swenson of Pleasant Grove dislocated his thumb. They outscored the Spirits 8 to 4 in the third quarter, which ultimately spelled the difference in the game. Jeff Swenson and Lincoln Church led the Spirits with 17 and 12 points respectively. Keith Newman and Mike Zorn (referred to as the "twin towers") handled the ball beautifullv throughout the tournament. tour-nament. Andy Weight rebounded and handled the inside game very well Jamie Bryant played clutch ball as the sixth man. Jamie came on in the semi-final game when Jeft Swenson dislocated his thumb and pumped in six straight free throws to assure the Spirits a chance at the championship.
