Show Lady Vikings drop 2 games during the 3A State Tourney The Lady Vikings made their first appearance in the girls 3A State Tourney on March 19 losing to Mountain View 55-40. After getting off to a terrible start and falling behind by a score of 17-3, the Vikings came roaring back to cut the lead to just 4 points with 2 minutes to go in the first half. However, a couple of turn overs and missed shots found the Vikings trailing by 9 at the half, 25-16. Again the Vikings came back in the third quarter to cut the lead back to 4 only again to suffer the same problem of turning the ball over which Mountain View capitalized on to increase their lead to 13 going into the 4th quarter. The Vikings came out strong the 4th quarter but were unable to catch up to the Bruins and ended up losing 55-40. Debbie Fisher had just an outstanding out-standing game leading the Vikings in scoring with 13, Kathy Maughan had 10,. Lila Fugal had 8, Cherylnn Johnson had 4, Jayleen Walker had 3 and Loura Joseph had 2. On Thursday, March 21, the Vikings returned to South High School to play Mountain Crest in the consolation bracket of the state tournament. The Vikings suffered, from poor shooting and rebounding to lose a hard fought decision, 52-44. The game was tight throughout as the Vikings trailed 10-8 at the end of the first quarter, 19-18 at half, and lead 31-30 at the end of the third quarter. However, the fourth quarter was , all Mountain Crest as they out-scored out-scored the Vikings 22-13. Defense really kept the Vikings in the game, especially the first three quarters. During the fourth quarter Mountain Crest made 10 out of 13 free throws to help them pull away from the Vikings in the closing minutes of the game. Kathy Maughan lead the lady -Vikings in scoring with 14 points, Cherylnn Johnson had 12, Debbie Fisher had 6, Loura Joseph had 5, , Kim Woffinden had 4, and Lila Fugal had 3. Considering that it was the first tourney appearance for the young lady Vikings in several vears, the ladies gave a good themselves and established themselves as a team to be recooped with next year. With four returning starters, a good group of junior varsity players returning and an outstanding 9th grade group of young ladies coming, the lady Viking basketball program should have an outstanding season next year.
