The 1984-8- 5 seventh and eighth grade Utah County Jr. Jazz program came to a successful conclusion last Friday evening at the Pleasant Grove Community Center where Pleasant Grove hosted the first Utah County seventh and eighth grade Jr. Jazz Tournament. Pleasant Grove had two teams in the tournament, the Spirits and the Jazz, that represented the local league. Fourteen teams from throughout the valley represented communities from Payson to Lehi. The Jazz ran into one of the finest young player performances the first night of the tournament as they fell to Spanish Fork No. 1 team, 59 to 4G. Reid from Spanish Fork made an astonishing 36 points in that game. In the Division Tournament, the Spirits from Pleasant Grove just missed representing Utah County at the Salt Palace as they fell to a fine Provo No. 1 team, 41 to 37. The loss represented the first loss for the Spirit team this season. It looked like in the championship game that the Spirits were in for an easy night of it as they jumped out to a 10 to 4 first quarter score. However, the Provo team repeated their performance the night before in the semi-final- s as they whipped the Spanish Fork No. 1 team, by overcoming a slow start, and tying the game when Jeff Swenson of Pleasant Grove dislocated his thumb. They outscored the Spirits 8 to 4 in the third quarter, which ultimately spelled the difference in the game. Jeff Swenson and Lincoln Church led the Spirits with 17 and 12 points respectively. Keith Newman and Mike Zorn (referred to as the "twin towers") handled the ball beautifullv throughout the tour-nament. Andy Weight rebounded and handled the inside game very well Jamie Bryant played clutch ball as the sixth man. Jamie came semi-fina- l game when Jeft on in the Swenson dislocated his thumb and pumped in six straight free throws at the to assure the Spirits a chance championship. "To win the region championship waa our goal," said Viking Coach, Keith Allred, during the basketball banquet last Thursday. ' Allred said that Pleasant Grove High has won five region titles in the past 40 years and that this years squad "came as close to playing to their potential as any team we've ever had." . Each varsity player was recognized for his contribution to the teams success which culminated in a 68-5- 8 win over Mountain View for third place in the 3-- State Tournament. : Kerry VanDyke earned the Best free Thrower award and was named Most Valuable Player for the season. Another junior, Gregg Bahr was recognized as Most Valuable Player in the four game State Tourney. " Senior Brad Kitchen was the Best Rebounder; Tracy Flinders the Catalyst; Scott Mosher Most Im-proved; and Mark Clements Most Unselfish. Four other seniors, Mark John-son, Eric Thomas, Billy Adamson and Ken Cordner got special mention for their roles as 'practice players.' , "They didn't get many playing minutes but their contribution to the team was just as important as those who played," said Allred. "Many lesser players, when they can see that they are not going to play alot of minuts, quit," Allred added as he praised these four for their great attitude during the year. Junior varsity players honored were: Brett Zabel and Ron Sim-mons as Most Inspirational; Nick u Starr, Most Courageous; Jim Debenham, Funnest Teammate; Mark Bronson, Most Improved; and Brent Larson, Most Valuable. Alah Bahr, assistant coach, presented each player with an engraved picture plaque. Bahr's junior varsity compiled a 13-- 7 season record plus an 8--2 region mark. Sophomore coach, Bruce Bushnell said "it is hard to go undefeated," in describing the sophomores perfect 10-- 0 Region 8 record. Bushnell made short comments about each of the sophomore players as he and assistant, John Wardenburg, presented the players with an award to remember the year. Todd Simmons, representing the soph's, praised the sophomore coaches and presented them with a plaque from the team. Alan Zabel, representing the parents, read a poem describing the games in the state tourney and Jim Starr gave each player a copy of the season stats. Starr also played a segment of the play-by-pla- y broadcast of the Orem game that P.G. won 48-4- Kitchen, Clements and Mosher honored Coaches Allred and Bahr. "This team won 16 games, a region championship and placed third in the State tourney," said Allred. "I'm proud of our defense, they caused alot of turnovers," he added. Another fact that Allred was justifiably proud of is that "not one technical foul was called on the varsity during the year.
