Show i . ; Senior wrestlers honored Four senior wrestlers were honored prior to Thursday's last Region 8 dual match. Shawn Pueblo, Brett Anderson, Chad Atkinson, Jim Shumway and senior manager, Lynn Reimschussel, were each presented gifts by the cheerleaders after the wrestlers escorted their parents to the center of the mat. Wrestling action followed the brief ceremony and it took less than an hour for the Vikes to roll over Carbon 54-9. Nine Vikings won by pins to send the crowd home early. Brad Mills, Lonnie Harris, Chad Henry, Brett Anderson, Shawn Pueblo, Rick Shumway, Jim Shumway, Chad Maxfield and Dan Phelon all won by pinning their opponents. PG's win over Carbon was expected ex-pected but in the southern end of the county, Payson unexpectedly beat previously undefeated Spanish Fork. Payson's win threw the Region 8 dual match standings into a three way tie between the Vikings, Spanish Fork and Payson. Each team finished the dual meet season with 4-1 records and set the stage for a tight Region 8 tourney that starts tomorrow in the PG gym. Spanish Fork had been expected to bring an undefeated record into that tourney, but the Payson win renewed hopes in Payson and Pleasant Grove for a Region 8 title. "Payson beating Spanish Fork doesn't surprise me that much," said Viking coach Darold Henry. "Most of our matches with Payson Jim Shumway, Viking co-captain, makes an unusual move just prior to pinning his Carbon opponent Thursday. Shumway has been a consistent winner for PG and will lead the Vikes into tomorrow's Region 8 tourney that will be held in the Viking gym. Friday, the Vikes hosted Uintah before a small home crowd and the Utes proved why they are the number one ranked 3-A team in the state by thumping the Vikes 41-6. Team captains Shawn Pueblo and Jim Shumway were the two winners for Pleasant Grove and both Viking wrestlers will be counted on for points and leadership tomorrow and Friday. Region wrestling starts Thursday evening and the championship matches are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Friday. |
