Photo by Steve Cook . i i No home,, team takes third By STEVE COOK t Tom Carlile, principal at Pleasant Grove High School, wanted a swim team for the school and that's what The swim team is brand new to PGHS, and not very well known, but that didn't matter to the swimmers. They wanted to swim and that is what they did every night after school, practice, practice, practice. It payed off as the team went to region with confidence and courage and the inexperienced squad walked away with third place. The coach, Lynne Judd Yocom, said, "Some of our swimmers will be back next year and iwth a little more work and experience, I think-we'l- l do all right." The team practices at the American Fork pool and has been assisted by American Fork's swim coach. DeviPs squeak past Vikings "The only statistic that counts is the final score," is an old statement that, unfortunately, was true for Pleasant Grove Friday. The Vikings outshot, out rebounded and out scored Springville for more than 31 minutes of a 32 minute game, but Jeff Thorpe drilled a shot with four seconds to play to boost Springville past Pleasant Grove, 52-5- The Red Devil win was the second two-poi- victory over this Vikes this year and kept Springville in a first place tie with Carbon in Region 8. Springville edged PG 49-4- 7 back in January. "Actually we could have won the game quite easily had we con-verted," said Viking coach, Keith Allred, who was still obviously hurting Monday morning after the narrow loss Friday. "Three missed one and one chances and a missed point blank lay-u- p gave them (Springville) a chance and they took advantage of it," the somewhat dejected coach said. Three different Viking players took turns missing those free throws in the final minutes of play. Up to that point PG had connected on 18 of 24 from the line, a very good 75 percent, but none of the final three chances would fall. PG took command early and led 17-- 9 after a quarter of play. By halftime, the Vikes still were on top 29-2- As the teams started for the dressing room, Coach Elliott Jordan had to be restrained by his assistants as he charged out on to the floor in an apparent attempt to get to the officials. The Red Devil coach's anger must have had a positive effect on the Springville players because in the second half they continually chipped away at the PG lead and Les Chappel tied the score at 50-5- 0 with 1:32 to play. PG worked the clock down to 41 seconds, but a bad pass gave Springville the last opportunity which Thorpe converted into another tight Springville win. Kerry VanDyke was the top scorer for PG with 19, while Brad Kitchen and Scott Mosher scored 9 points each and Greg Bahr put in 7. Tracy Flinders scored 4 points. Chappell was the leading Red Devil with 16, and Scott Mitchell, the left-hand- junior, scored 15. PG played at Lehi last night and will host Payson Friday.
