The sport was created to give athletes something to do in the winter and with snow on the ground and temperatures in the teens, it must be basketball season. At Pleasant Grove High Coaches John Kurtz and Marie Bone have been conducting tryouts the past two weeks for the girls basketball team. Of the 23 girls who turned out, the coaches report that thev plan on keeping 18 and dividing them into a nine member varsity and nine member junior varsity squad. That division will come later in the week. Returning from last year's team to tryout this year are seniors Margo Nelson, Angie Bates and Lorna Joseph. Juniors Lila Fugal, Debbie Fisher, Kathy Maughan, Cherlynn Johnson, Melissa Bennett and D'Nette Holdaway are also hoping to make the team. Several sophomores are candidates can-didates for positions on the squad. The girls team opens the season on the road Dec. 4 at Coach Bone's former school, North Sanpete, and will host Richfield on Dec. 5. The Richfield game will start at 5:30 p.m. for the junior varsity and 7 p.m. for the varsity in the main gym at the high school.
