The sport was created to give athletes something to do in the winter and with snow on the ground and temperatures in the teens, it must be basketball season. At Pleasant Grove High Coaches John Kurtz and Marie Bone have been conducting tryouts the past two weeks for the girls basketball team. Of the 23 girls who turned out, the coaches report that thev plan on keeping 18 and dividing them into a nine member varsity and nine member junior varsity squad. That division will come later in the week. Returning from last year's team to tryout this year are seniors Margo Nelson, Angie Bates and Lorna Joseph. Juniors Lila Fugal, Debbie Fisher, Kathy Maughan, Cherlynn Johnson, Melissa Bennett and D'Nette Holdaway are also hoping to make the team. Several sophomores are can-didates for positions on the squad. The girls team opens the season on the road Dec. 4 at Coach Bone's former school, North Sanpete, and will host Richfield on Dec. 5. The Richfield game will start at 5:30 p.m. for the junior varsity and 7 p.m. for the varsity in the main gym at the high school. I have season tickets at BYU and have had for the past several years, but last Saturday was the first game I've been able to attend this year. The new stadium is as good as any in the country and there are no stadiums' better for spectators. The setting with the mountains in the background make BYU a great place to spend a Saturday watching football. With the LaVeil Edwards coached Cougars ranked number one, a stadium record of 65,508 fans turned out to watch BYU take on Utah State. Remember this was on a holiday weekend when most of the students were away from campus. Critics, who opposed enlarging the stadium because it would never be filled, were wrong. Since BYU has not scheduled night games for several years, questions were raised about having lights. Saturday they were turned on late in the contest even though the game started at 11:30 a.m. If the length of the game wasn't a record it was close to it. The officials got blamed for the four --hour and seven-minut- e marathon, but the officials get blamed for everything. USU head coach, Chris Pella, blamed the officials for his season and if you believe that you have to give credit to the officials for BYU's 12-- 0 season. Seriously the 4:07 garnewas the result of 108 passes, 70 running plays, 22 punts and television commercials added another 20 minutes. The 30 penalties, 20 on BYU and 10 on USU didn't shorten the contest. If a person wants to watch a BYU game and be there early and stay until it is over (something a lot of BYU fans don't do), plan on at least six hours. To paraphrase a military commercial, "It's a great place to be." On the negative side, BYU fans are as ignorant of the rules as fans everywhere. But as a visitor from said during the game, "Byu fans don't have the excuse of being drunk." Paul James and Mark Lyons verbally worked the officials over during the game, Marion Dunn took a shot at them in his column on Sunday and Tuesday morning, Jim Braden took his turn at ripping the officials over KSL radio. Since I know and have officiated with each of the officials who worked the BYU-US- game, I went to the officials dressing room after the game to hear their reaction. "A nightmare game," said one exhausted crew member who was passively eating a sandwich in a far corner. "World War III without guns, said another as he opened the shower door." The tensions of a game involving an undefeated team playing a team with only one win had taken its physical and emotional toll of these veterans. Throw in the rivalry aspect of a BYU-US- game and the fact that on every play the officials were forced to break up the "chicken fights," endure the verbal harassment from some of the coaches on both sidelines, it was easy for me to have empathy for these six men. Criticize the judgement calls if you like, we all do, but mechanically this crew did a fine job. They were in position to make the calls, they ignored those in-fractions that had no bearing on the play and did a good job on con-trolling a game that could have degenerated into a street fight at any point. Regarding the unsportsmanlike call near the end of the game on BYU's great receiver, Glen Kozlowski, the official said that Kozlowski called him several un-printable names, hence the 15 yards. I was unable to get Kozlowski's version of the incident. On to the Holiday Bowl. BYU is in a no win situation playing a Michigan team that sports a 6-- 5 record. Great in tradition, an ex-cellent coaching staff and a solid team this year, the Wolverines will give BYU a tough game and its even money they'll beat the Cougars. Why the no win situation? Even if BYU should beat Michigan by 21 or more points one of the teams in the New Year's Day bowls will be voted number one in the final balloting. Time will tell and I've been wrong many times before. After all, I said Dan Marino wouldn't make e prOS. '.' ; State football fans enjoy the event at the U of U during the PG-Be- n Lomond game.
