The Little Oak Cloggers of Lehi will provide entertainment along with the Reata Riders who will present a riding demonstration. "We're happy to have Ken Gillman (of Lindon) as announcer," Mrs. Jensen stated. He is a popular retired rodeo celebrity who has been a Utah rodeo announcer for many years. A special activity of the day will be a community fair. Individuals will be displaying crafts and hob-bies from 10 a.m. to noon. Events such as calf riding, calf roping, goat tying, barrel racing, pole bending and goat roping are scheduled. The public is invited to attend the day long activities. Raging Waters are a splash By SHARON MORREV If you are looking for a fun place to take the teenagers and you have a hefty pocketful of cash, try out Raging Waters in west Salt Lake. The slides, the Wild Wave and all the goodies inbetween make it a place to spend the whole day and get a sunburn to boast about before you know it. There's a kiddie castle of rocks and waterfalls with lifeguards on every corner: The rocks and the. water make it fun, the guards make it safe. (They actually blow the whistle on the big "kids" that try to take over the small fry pools and move 'em out -- 1 appreciated that.) There is a play pool for the more adventurous older kid with a cat-walk and a suds pond. The water's ice cold beneath the tire obstacle course - they may as well have put alligators beneath you - anyway it puts in the right element of "fear of falling in." The slides are every courage level. I'm a minus one so I opted for watching my bigger kids try them out. ."White Lightning" was a favorite, whereas the ski slide scared the daylights out of my eldest. Raging Water's has it all, eats, arcade games, air pads to charter so you can loll about in the wild waves. Once the pain of paying to get in wears off, it's fun to be there. (Grand Opening prices are $7.95 for ages eight and up, $6.95 for ages 4 thru 7, babies up to 3 years are free.) Located on 1700 South off the Redwood Road freeway exit, Raging Waters is open from mid-morni-till evening every day, including holidays. We liked it. You will too. Though k was not a really good reason for '! going I am glad I went Few local people have probably ever heard of Dr. Semmelweiss, a I Hungarian physician of the 1800s I who eventually became insane, frustrated by the "doctors", of the j day who would not listen to his theory regarding childbed fever I deaths in spite ofthe evidence in his I favor. I This is a powerful story, directed by an eastern U.S. director, Edwin Sherin and featuring the best of BYU talent. Any director would enjoy doing a show with the likes of Barta Heiner, Charles Whitman, Charles Metten, Lael Woodbury, Ivan Crosland and Robert Nelson. Then throw in the talents of Bruce Newbold, who has been seen in "The Executioner's Song", as the young doctor Semmelweiss, along with several other local actors who do a superb job. If BYU gave an Oscar for performances the one given by Bruce Newbold would have to be listed among the toprunners. His characterization of this frustrated man was almost spectacular. Dr. Semmelweiss discovered the apparent link between the doctor's handling of cadavers in their study of medicine and the incidence of childbed fever among those women that the doctors delivered of their babies. His study showed that if the doctors washed thoroughly with a strong antiseptic solution before delivering the babies that the cases of childbed fever dropped ' considerably. Yet, the doctors as a whole would not accept his theory in plain view of the facts. The young doctor tried to forget the results of his study and went into private practice. Later, a colleague convinced him that he should try to promote his theory and in his efforts he eventually lost his mind. The blood of those women he felt he had killed r k in innocence because of the contamination on his hands and clothes was too much for his conscience to bear. He died through his efforts to show the relationship between the-unseen matter and the chud bed fever deaths. A most convincing cast supported Mr. Newbold in this dramatic play. The sets were remarkable in their versatility. Costuming was authentic and added to the flavor of the production. Although viewers will be glad they live in this day and age to have babies, the drama is well worth seeing. .Tickets are available at the Drama Ticket Office, 278-387- spotlight - Wednesday, August 1, 1984 - Page 1 II Fair slates excitement You most certainly won't want to miss all of the fabulous ent-ertainment that will be featured "Under the Big Top" at the 1984 Utah County Fair.
