By MARC HADDOCK and the CITIZEN STAFF The arrest of the Ricky Martin Knapp and Charles Alan Carries in Cheyenne, Wyo. Monday capped off a week of intense activity by local and federal law enforcement officials of-ficials following the July 24 slaying of Brenda Wright Lafferty and her 15 month-old daughter Erica in American Fork's most brutal murder in many years. The men are said to have been "traveling companions" of Ronald and Dan Lafferty, according to Chief Randy Johnson, and are accused of participating with the Lafferty's in the slaying. (See related story.) Chief Johnson said the arrest of the Knapp and Carnes intensifies the search for the Lafferty brothers. He said the arrested suspects say they last saw the brothers in Wendover, Nev., the early morning of July 25 when they took Laffertys' car and headed east, leaving the brothers on foot and without changes in clothing. Chief Johnson said the Federal Bureau of Investigation is following leads that have come in to his department from outside of the state in the search for the Laffertys, with local and area law enforcement officers following up on in-state tips. Tuesday's court appearance was a high point in a case which has shocked not only American Fork, but also surrounding communities as police have disclosed information regarding hit lists, fundamentalist religious beliefs and rumored ritualistic killings. The area was stunned Tuesday when Allen Lafferty, the victims' husband and father, discovered the slain bodies as he returned home from work in Ogden. Johnson said the . preliminary autopsy showed the victims died from loss of blood caused by a sharp cutting instrument. Although no murder weapon has been found, police are checking what is discribed as a boning knife found near Wendover to determine if it is related to the killings, according to Wootton. The David Steward Low residence at 11440 N. 6000 West in Highland was burglarized that same afternoon, af-ternoon, but the Low family was vacationing in California at the time, according to Alpine-Highland Police chief Brent Leseberg. The burglars broke in through a window, ransacked the home and left with $100 and a small electronic siren. By Wednesday, police had announced an-nounced they were seeking Mrs. Lafferty's brothers-in-law in connection con-nection with the killings. That disclosure again shocked the communities, as many knew Ron Lafferty as a member of Highland's first city council and a former member of the bishopric in his Highland ward. He was also known as a good worker with youth and had led a campaign as city councilman to keep beer out of Highland's Kountry Korner grocery and gas store. His brother Dan had made headlines two years earlier as a candidate for Utah County Sheriff when he paid his filing fees in grain and later was arrested for speeding, resisting arrest and assaulting an officer. He gained wide attention as a strict constitutionalist who felt the . government monetary system was illegal. By week's end, police had suggested a three-pronged motive for the killings, a motive which involved Ron Lafferty's divorce, his excommunication from the LDS Church and a hand-written "revelation" to Lafferty in which God commanded him to kill four people. .
