Show Review - Wednesday, 1984 10 I August 1, - Page Arrests cap week of bizarre twists, death list f I i I i 1 A if Hi in - f ' ,s? By MARC HADDOCK and the CITIZEN STAFF The arrest of the Ricky Martin Knapp and Charles Alan Carries in Cheyenne, Wyo. Monday capped off a week of intense activity by local and federal law enforcement of-ficials following the July 24 slaying of Brenda Wright Lafferty and her 15 month-ol- d daughter Erica in American Fork's most brutal murder in many years. The men are said to have been "traveling companions" of Ronald and Dan Lafferty, according to Chief Randy Johnson, and are accused of participating with the Lafferty's in the slaying. (See related story.) Chief Johnson said the arrest of the Knapp and Carnes intensifies the search for the Lafferty brothers. He said the arrested suspects say they last saw the brothers in Wendover, Nev., the early morning of July 25 when they took Laffertys' car and headed east, leaving the brothers on foot and without changes in clothing. Chief Johnson said the Federal Bureau of Investigation is following leads that have come in to his department from outside of the state in the search for the Laffertys, with local and area law enforcement officers following up on tips. Tuesday's court appearance was a high point in a case which has shocked not only American Fork, but also surrounding communities as police have disclosed information regarding hit lists, fundamentalist religious beliefs and rumored ritualistic killings. The area was stunned Tuesday when Allen Lafferty, the victims' husband and father, discovered the slain bodies as he returned home from work in Ogden. Johnson said the preliminary autopsy showed the victims died from loss of blood caused by a sharp cutting instrument. Although no murder weapon has been found, police are checking what is discribed as a boning knife found near Wendover to determine if it is related to the killings, according to Wootton. The David Steward Low residence at 11440 N. 6000 West in Highland was burglarized that same af-ternoon, but the Low family was vacationing in California at the time, according to Alpine-Highlan- d Police chief Brent Leseberg. The burglars broke in through a window, ransacked the home and left with $100 and a small electronic siren. By Wednesday, police had an-nounced they were seeking Mrs. Lafferty's brothers-in-la- in con-nection with the killings. That disclosure again shocked the communities, as many knew Ron Lafferty as a member of Highland's first city council and a former member of the bishopric in his Highland ward. He was also known as a good worker with youth and had led a campaign as city councilman to keep beer out of Highland's Kountry Korner grocery and gas store. His brother Dan had made headlines two years earlier as a candidate for Utah County Sheriff when he paid his filing fees in grain and later was arrested for speeding, resisting arrest and assaulting an officer. He gained wide attention as a strict constitutionalist who felt the government monetary system was illegal. By week's end, police had suggested a three-pronge- d motive for the killings, a motive which involved Ron Lafferty's divorce, his excommunication from the LDS Church and a hand-writte- n "revelation" to Lafferty in which God commanded him to kill four people. . The revelation was" taken in a search of. a Utah County home some time last week, Johnson said. Mrs. Lafferty and her toddler were on the list, as well as LDS Church officials purportedly in-volved in Lafferty's ex-communication from the.. LDS Church last year. Other "revelations" now held by the police disclosed the names in disfavor with the two brothers, and possibly in danger. . The individuals named on the death list were notified and have gone into hiding. Others in possible danger have' also been warned and many of therh have also left the area, ' The FBI officially entered the case Friday when they issued a federal warrant for unlawful flight to avoid prosecution against Ron Lafferty. A similar warrant was. filed against Dan Lafferty on Monday, The victims were buried Monday in Twin Fall, Idaho, in a single casket, with the baby cradled in her mother's arms following .'funeral services Saturday"in;American Fork and Monday in Kimberly, Idaho, the home of Mrs. Lafferty's parents. Police were visible at the American Fork services, checking the over 300 mourners. Neighbors remembered Mrs. Lafferty as an outgoing, friendly. By SHARON MORREY What kind of a lady would surround herself with dozens of youngsters for two to three days at a time; camp, hike and sing; and still come out smiling? Only a grandma could carry it off with "grand" style. Geneve Cornell of American Fork is such a lady. With 34 grandkids to her name, Geneve is carrying on a tradition that makes her a big hit with both parents and children. Each year for the past seven, Geneve has invited troupes of her grandchildren to spend a couple of days with her at her mountain cabin inFairview. There they share moments to treasure forever. "They hunt for lizards and fossils. The children enjoy the wildlife there - deer, fox, rock chucks, rabbits, ground hogs, squirrels and chip-munks, even eagles, hawks, a great -- variety of birds." "We do all sorts of fun han-dicrafts. We paint rocks. We play games, hold all kinds of com-petitions," says Geneve. "They love V; . - St! 1 J- - ' L- - ;:--iXi'- e-. X - ' I' to compete. Last year one little girl jumped the rope 398 times to win a prize." Coloring contests, beauty con-tests, even a shoe kick and ball toss are planned for the cousins with Geneve carefully planning enough contests in enough different areas that every grandchild can see a possibility of winning. Winners get a prize. The losers learn about the value of being a good sport. "They compete fairly and we don't have a lot of problem. They can see Geneve Cornell with just some happy grandchildren. that no one child wins everything and they seem to love it." "I find this time together is an opportunity. Teaching moments come up that would never happen but for this. I try to take advantage of that," shares Geneve.
