Show Review - Thursday, October 21, 1982 - Page 11 sjpcsmts. . Vikes lose O.T. thriller Both teams were so emotionally drained that even the winners had trouble finding enough energy to celebrate. It's not an overstatement to call this a "great game between two great high school teams." Statistically, Hill had an outstand-ing night in rushing for 99 yards and three touchdowns plus kicking five of six extra points. He was one for one in the field goal department and also passed for 124 yards and one touchdown. Covey threw the ball 48 times and completed 26 for 245 yards and four touchdowns. He also scored one touchdown on a one yard run. Harrison rushed for 60 yards and Allred added 40 more while Hoffeins was the leading Bulldog rusher with 71 yards. In the punting department, Hill averaged 43.5 yards on four punts and Ford punted once for 37 yards for Provo. Walker averaged 51 yards on two kickoffs and Ford had four tries for a 56 yard average. PG totaled 314 yards in offense to 339 for the Bulldogs. The statistics all indicate the closeness of the game, one that will be talked about in both . towns for years to ocme. As the crowd left Bulldog stadium, several PG and Provo fan's were overheard saying "it's too bad that one team had to loose this game." PG will close out Region Seven play today with a 3:00 p.m. game at Orem. The Tigers must beat PG to qualify for post season play while the Vikes have second spot and a play-of- f date on the 29th of this month sewed up. Right now that play off game looks to be against Judge Memorial and will be played in Viking Stadium. V ...... - x V r V ' v ' . --y s -- ' , j j - U .V j V 1 of the endzone and his leadping catch appeared to be a touchdown under high school rules. The Viking tight end went high to catch the pass and would have come down in bounds had not two Provo defenders pushed him but. However the officials ruled him out of bounds and play continued. Larry Baer, perhaps Provo's best athlete, took a 10 yard pass from Covey and Ford kicked the extra point to start the third overtime. Allred gained six and Harrison made three more and then Harrison bulled in to bring the Vikes to within a point at 26-2- Hill tied thegame with a smooth kick after Biggs made a perfect snap to Frampton. In the fourth extra period, PG was faced with a fourth and goal on the eight and elected to go for a field goal. Hill made it 30-2- 7 with a 25 yard effort that split the uprights. Provo needed only to score a touchdown to win but after three downs the Bulldogs were still on the six yard line and Ford was called on to kick his third field goal of the night. Ford grabbed his head as the kick sailed up thinking that he had missed, but the ruling official called he kick good and thegame was tied again. Biggs caught Unga for a five yard loss but then Covey, cool under pressure, passed to Baer for six point to start overtime number five. Fords kick was again good. PG came right back with Hill passing 10 yards to Chambers for the touchdown. Hill's kick made the score 37 all. Overtime number six saw Hill race around right end on first down for a 10 yard touchdown and then the senior signal caller calmly kicked the extra point. With the exception of a missed extra point and a blocked punt in the first quarter, PG's kicking game like Provo's, was outstanding. It took Provo four downs to score with Covey sneaking in and Ford's kick knotted the score at 44 each. Bulldog, Clarence Hoffeins, a 5'5" dynamo, scored from ten yards out and Fords kick made it 51-4- 4 to start the seventh and final overtime. .M.v.w .. . .,.... .... .... Photo John Hill Now it was the Vikings turn to go on the attack and Allred gained four, Hill moved the ball to the one and on third down, Hill ground into the endzone behind driving blocks from Harvey and McAlliste. Hill kicked the point after to tie the score at 20-2- Neither team could score in the second overtime with Hilton ending - the Provo possession with an interception in the endzone that was followed by an officials inadvertent whistle. How far Hilton could have returned the ball is pure speculation but his effort was halted by the officials goof. When the Vikes took their turn, Hill passed to Walker who was running along the endline at the back .. .., ... i' - Pleasant Grove and Provo struggle-d for three hours and 10 minutes friday night before the number two ranked Buldogs edged the Vikings in seven overtimes. Gaines are frequently decided on the last play but in this marathon contest, the most pressure packed in recent history, seven times the outcome hung on the last play. The regulation 48 minute game ended in a 13-1- 3 deadlock. On the initial drive of the first quarter, a 17 play, ball controll masterpiece, Viking Quarterback Clark Hill carried eight times for 31 yards and completed two passes for 16 more. The drives big play was a sliding catch by Craig Hilton, good for 15 yards that set up Hill's five yard keeper for the touchdown. The point after kick was no good. Provo went ahead when Sean Covey dumped a screen pass to Fine Unga and the Bulldog fullback rolled down the East sideline 30 yards to the endzone. John Fords extra point kick gave Provo a 7-- 6 lead. With 22 seconds left to play in the first half, Ford astounded the large crowd with a 50 yard field goal making the score 10-- Everyone expected PG to run out the clock but Coach Doug Bluth had other ideas. Hill passed 14 yards to Scott Walker on an out pattern and Walker stopped the clock by getting out of bounds. Jason Allred then ran six yards on a draw and the Vikes took a time out.. V-- With just enought time for one play, Hill rolled right stopped and then threw back to Walker for an apparent screen pass. However, Walker stepped in behind a Leo Biggs block and rifled a bullet to Hilton who was 20 yards behind the nearest Bulldog defender. Hilton raced untouched into the endzone on a play that covered 62 yards. With Hill's point after kick, out of Darren Framptons hold, the Vikes jogged into the locker room leading 13-1- Defense dominated the third period with PG holding Provo to four yards rushing and 26 passing. The Vikes did slightly better with 19 rushing and 29 passing yards. PG's defensive effort was nothing short of spectacular. Time after time the outsized Vikes halted the vaunted Provo offensive - machine and were it not for the talented foot of Ford, the Bulldogs would have been held to a single touchdown in regulation play. . Biggs, Mark Harvey, Kelly Sanderson, Phil Cook, Shaun Story ndBrad Kitchen deserve credit that defensive players seldom get. Along with Brent McAllister and Curt Harrison, they demonstrated just nat coaches mean when they talk Jbout hard hitting, quick pursuing team defense. In the secondary, Walker, Tim Chambers, Hilton and Allred did a 8 job of defending Covey, the states best passer, and his talented receivers. Hilton came up with two 'flterceptions, one in regulation and the other to stop Provo in the second overtime. The only second half points came w'th 5:40" remaining in the fourth quarter when Ford connected on a 49 yard field goal to tie the score. With seconds to play Ford tried again 40 yards out but this time he ""ssed, sending the game into overtime. It took Provo a single play to re, a Covey to Ford 10 yard pass. 'ra kicked the point after and the uudog fans though that the game Was their's. Satisfy Your Hunger At The Hew j I nnnrifrR I uulHJuvJUDLsuu I in I 35 W. Main - Am. Fork W Grand Opening "j?
