Nat'l Guard moves tons during weekend project Things are looking a little different on the corner of 100 E. and 200 S., next to where the old junior high school gym is being converted into a Community Center. Over the past weekend the Utah National Guard Headquarters Co. 1457 Engineering Battalion of American Fork, with support from "C" Company of Provo, excavated ' tons of earth and chunks of cement ,. from the site so that a parking lot and landscaping can be installed next to the Community Center. The Battalion provided the equipment equip-ment and manpower along with crews from the Pleasant Grove Street Department and Parks Department De-partment and Parks Department to begin and nearly complete the large expense to the city. Larry Phillips, construction equipment equip-ment supervisor for the unit, said the equipment section from American Fork does projects like this for cities and other non-profit organizations. He estimated that the unit had moved about 10,000 to 15,000 yards of earth and concrete during the two-day project. The Battalion, which meets once a month, usually does jobs like this one while the weather is good. They worked on the Pleasant Grove rifle range at Wade Springs about three years ago, Phillips said. This past weekend they used two D7E tractors, two two and one-half yard loaders, and three five-yard dump trucks, plus the equipment furnished by the city. Others working on the project from the Battalion were Wally Young, Brad Wilken, Ron Colledge, ! Steve Anderson, Richard Chadwick, Dave Allman, Stan Palmer and Gale j Whatcott. j Those participating from "C" Company were Kenneth Sweat, i Russell Woods, Don Stickney and Allen Turner. , City employees involved were , Dennis Carter, John Hill, Dennis Lucas and Doug Bezzant. Bill Hoglund said that when all the area is graded then an asphalt parking lot will be installed for those using the Community Center. Trees, shrubs, grass and picnic tables will i be used to decorate the area, also. Bill Hoglund, city parks and recreation supervisor, said he had not expected the Battalion to be able to give any assistance to the city until in November. However, they were able to rearrange their schedule so that they could do the work now while the weather was good. At the same time the Battalion was working on a parking lot for the Alpine Rodeo Grounds. Jay Healey, project supervisor for the Battalion said they had cut down four feet to grade so the parking lot and landscaping could be installed. All of the work was done at no |
