An amazing story within a story was the fact that Chambers broke his arm early in the first quarter but the gutty receiver - defensive back, refused to come out and played almost the entire game with a bone in his right arm completely broken. On Judge's next drive, Chambers came up with a big defensive play. The Bulldogs tried a halfback pass but Chambers read it perfectly and intercepted on the Viking 12 yard line. On PG's first play following the interception, Harrison roared up the middle for 18 yards but lost the ball when he was tackled and Judge recovered. The Bulldogs marched 29 yards in six plays with Rodman, the backfield workhorse, carrying the final seven yards for the touchdown. With till over six minutes to play, the Judge coaching staff elected to go for the tie and sent Rodman back in to kick the extra point. The kick was wide to the right. PG geared up for an onside kick but the Bulldogs kicked the ball deep, and the Vikes then ran five minutes off the clock before being forced to punt the ball with 55 seconds to play. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 f in the Sun Bowl. p: Walker threw several blocks to spring Allred for extra yards. When Judge came up fast to cover Allred, Hill kept the ball and turned upfield on the keeper. Only five times in 54 rushing plays did PG fail to gain yardage. Two of those came late in the game as the Vikes were running out the clock. Following the intermission, Judge took the kickoff and it was obvious that they were "fired up." In eight plays they regained the lead with Rodman carrying in from the four. Rodmans point after kick hit the inside edge of the left upright and bounced in to make itl4-13with7:15 to play in the third quarter. The winning points came on the second play of the fourth period when Harrison scored his second touchdown, touch-down, this one from the one yard line. Allred's 13 yard gallop to the four set up the score and that run came after three straight carries by Hill, good for 31 yards. The drive was kept alive by a Hill to Hilton pass that covered 17 yards on a third and seven situation near midfield. Leading 19-14, Coach Bluth elected to go for two points. Allred went in motion from his tailback spot and Hill rolled right behind a Harrison block. From his wide receiver spot, Hilton got a yard deep in the endzone, turned inside and stopped. With Allred and Chambers pulling the Judge defenders to the outside, Hill spotted Hilton, and while on the run, fired a bullet that Hilton went high to catch just as two Bulldog defenders drove him back out of the endzone. Forward progress made the two point play good and despite protests from the Judge players, PG led, 21-14 with 11:15 remaining in the game. LINEBACKING CORE- PG's linebackers, Brent McAllister (63), Curt Harrison (32), Kelly Sanderson (44) and Mark Harvey (50) all close in on Anthony Cordova, Judge Memorial quarterback, the linebackers will be a key factor in stopping Dixie's scrambling signal caller, Dave Esplin. Photo - Steve Cook. I History was made Friday afternoon after-noon in Viking Stadium. For the first time in more than 20 years, Pleasant Grove won a state playoff football game. A scrappy little bunch of Vikings bested defending 3-A Champions Judge Memorial, 21-20 to advance to the quarter-finals tomorrow in St. George against undefeated Dixie. Running the triple option to near j perfection, Clark Hill, Curt Harrison I and Jason Allred took the opening j kickoff and in 12 plays had the lead However, the Bulldogs took advantage of the excellent field position and Shawn Rodman evened the score and then kicked the extra point to put Judge ahead, 7-6. Rodman was to account for all 20 of Judge's points and ironically, his missed extra point with 6:05 left in the game proved to be the difference. Trailing by a point, Hill, Harrison and Allred went to work behind some devasting blocking and marched to the three yard line before a fumble halted the drive. Framptons hold made it 13-7 at halftime. Allred, PG's stocky tailback, was having his finest day with 82 yards rushing in the first half and he finished the game with 151 yards on 18 carries. Harrison carried 17 times in the game for 97 yards and Hill totaled 80 yards in 18 tries. A member of the Bulldog coaching staff commented during halftime that "nobody had run the ball against us like that in the past five years." When the Bulldog defense closed in to stop Harrison, Hill pitched to Allred who followed wide side blocks from Craig Hilton and Tim Chambers to turn the corner for good gains. The snap for the point after kick was off the : mark and the kick sailed wide. That missed point played a key role in dictating strategy later in the game. Defensively, PG stopped the Bulldogs and following a Judge punt, the Vikes were moving toward another score. But big Pete Rokick (6'7", 225 pounds) deflected a Hill pass at the line of scrimmage and Ken Kreutler intercepted and returned return-ed it 40 yards before Hill made a touchdown saving tackle. PG's defense, spearheaded by Phil Cook, Leo Biggs and Kelly Sanderson, held and again the powerful ground game of the Vikings moved the ball into scoring territory. With 54 seconds left in the first half, Hill followed center, Brent McAllister, up the middle on a quarterback sneak, good for a yard and a go-ahead touchdown. Hill's point after kick out of Darrin |
