Show THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 13, 1979 PLFASANT GROVE REVIEW, PLEASANT GROVE, UTAH THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 13, 1979 Roundabout Has Fast Races Saturday When the starting flag came down these fellows really started moving. When they reached the checkered flag Spencer Lunt was in front, Bill Nielson 2nd, Dick Goetz 3rd, John Frampton 4th, Kay Mitani 5th. Our 60 year old. 'fast Eddie' brought up a close rear. Bicycle race winners this week were; Spencer Lunt, Mike Frampton, Chad Peacock, Jason Brackenberry, Frank Powell, Mike Turner, Travis Lindburg, and Steven Covington. Moto-cros- s winners were - Chad Frampton, Chad Peacock, Frank Powell, Travis Lind-burg, and Steven Cov-ington. Kent Sweat took him his 6th trophy for winn-ing another Wheeli con-test. MODIFIED CLASS Marty West is winner in Modified Class and gets trophy from Sarah Chatwin, who did a job all afternon last Saturday. When 2 Willinghams turned fast enough times to put them both in the Stock Trophy Dash. It gave them 2, out of 4 chances to win. Everyone figured this was a pretty sure thing. But we had all forgot-ten about how much luck, skill and chance is also involved. On the first lap Larry Park slowed down enough on turn 2 for both Willinghams to pass. On the 2nd lap Liz nearly took her hubby Don, off turn 2, and Larry whipped to the front once again. In the 3rd lap Don looked like he thought he was a stunt driver, as he hit the wall, spun and kept right on racing, and challenging Parks lead. But Larry had found the groove and he was still in front at the end of the 4 lap trophy dash. Norman Rhodes didn't slow down at all in the Limited Stock trophy Dash. Nor did he made any mistakes. He was in front all the way. When Rod Mitani went high, Kriss Sweat had his chance and slipped into the front and there he stayed to take the win in the Teen Stock trophy dash. Once again there was no stopping, or passing Norman Rhodes in the Limited Heat. He started and ended in It was Marty West all the way in the modified Dash. LeAlma Rhodes put up a good fight in the Stock heat race. But Larry Park waited his chance, then put the pedal down in time to take the win. Don Will-ingha-placed 2nd and LeAlma 3rd. front. Young Darrin Mitani found out it isn't as easy as it looks when brother Rod let him drive his car in the Teen Stock Heat race. Donna Willingham worked her way to the front in 3 laps and there she stayed for the win. Don Rhodes placed 2nd, Hal Leonard 3rd, Ronnie Beardall 4th and Darrin brought up the rear. You've heard the phrase 'flying high', well thats just what Bill Davis did during the Modified Heat race. He was challenging Marty Wests lead when he lost control spun on turn 3, his frame dug into the edge of the track throw-ing the car into the air and he landed upside down off the edge of the track. He was not hurt, needless to say, neither did he beat Marty. Our new lady driver looked like she was playuing ring around the rosie during the stock main event. She spun 3 times in 10 laps. While one of our 'Old Pros' (LeAlma Rhodes) was giving it all she had, trying to hold the lead. But Don Will-ingham had decided it was his turn to win. He worked his way from back to front in 6 laps and stayed there for the win. Joe Remmes plac-ed 2nd and Liz Will-ingham 3rd. When Joe McPhie had a flat tire on his newly aquired Limited Class car. He got to watch the Limited main event from the center of the track. Norman Rhodes held the lead for his 3rd win of the day, with Dick Goetz following for 2nd, and Gary Davis. Young Dan Rhodes put the pedal to the metal in the teen class main event, and it paid off with his first win this year. Ron Beardall placed 2nd, and Donna Willingham 3rd. Although Bill Davis was back on the track in time for the Modified Main. He still couldn't out pace Marty West, Marty took the win, with Bill placing 2nd. I guess men aren't as vain as women are said to be when a special event was called for men over 30 years old, on the pedal bikes. Several men admitted or claimed being that age. There was even oxi contestant who said he was 60. LIMITED EVENTS Norman Rhodes wins all three Limited Events Saturday. Sarah Chatwin is Trophy Queen for the races held last Saturday afternoon. STOCK CLASS In a Dust cloud, the Stock class rounds the turn in race. YARDAGE Jim Moore carries for yardage in Dixie game. 86 is Craig Swapp and 22 is Jeff Jackson. Dixie Ruins P.G. Home Game by Chub Gillman The Pleasant Grove Vikings fell just short and two points away from victory as they lost a heartbreaker to Dixie by a score of 8-- on Friday. The improved Vik-ings played much bet-ter than last week and held the Flyers scoreless but were unable to capitalize on three first half drive-an- d the scoreboard showed no score at the half. PI. Grove came out fired up and after recieving the kickoff, drove downfield on good passing by Barry Laga and great receiv- - ing by Jeff Jackson and Justin Bone. After two running plays failed and the Vikings faced third and goal on the seven, Barry Laga pitched out to tail back Mark Thacker who threw a beautiful pass to Justin Bone in the end zone. Brad Nielsen added the extra point for P.G. Then with only four minutes remaining in the game, Dixie faced fourth and fifteen on the 45 and a despera-tion pass proved suc-cessful as a beautiful catch brought the ball to the five. The Flyers then ran the ball Up the middle three con-secutive times for the score. They then elected to go for two on a fake kick and quarterback Kip Staeli rolled out to put Dixie up by one. P.G. wouldn't give up, however, driving downfield quickly but falling just short when Dixie intercepted a pass with just 42 seconds remaining. P.G. travels to Cedar City Friday for a 7:30 game with the Redmen. DEFENSIVE LINE No. 69, Peter Pope, No. 55, Brad Baxter, put pressure on Dixie. No. 24 is Jim Moore and No. 20 Mark Thacker. . photo Cathy Wallgren. Rec. Flag Football Set P.G. City Recreation Dept is sponsoring a flag football program for adults 18 years old and older. The townspeople have given the Vikes their full support so far this year and the team members are very proud of that. There have been lots of bad breaks go against the Vikings and they haven't been to impressive at time but the team is young and inexperienced and are making progress each week. So for a good enter-taining Friday night come and see the Vik-ings play and give them your full support. It will really be ap-preciated. The Vikings play at Cedar City Friday night and then Payson comes to the Vikes home field for the High Schools Homecoming. So all Alumni should come and support their Alma Mater. Tractor Driving Success The Tractor Driving Contest sponsored by Utah County 4- - II in connnection with Utah County Fair held August 7, 1979 at the Spanish Fork Fairgrounds was a tremendous success. The contest was under the direction of Scott McKendrick, County Agent, and supervised by Merrill West, Palmyra. Men, women and children from Utah county were invited to attend and compete in the contest. The con-test consisted of driving a two-whe- and four wheel tractor through given boun-daries which included backing up, turning and driving through cones without knocking them down. The win-ners were Brent Money (Palmyra) and Darwin Koyle (Salem) in the 4 H senior division, Merril Adams (American Fork) 4 H Junior High Point man, Eldon Fackrell (Springville) in the men's division, and Liz Adams (Pleasant Grove) in the women's division. Brent Money and Darwin Koyle will go to Logan during September to compete in State 4 H com-petition. Before the contest a program was held con-sisting of lectures and films of tractor and farm machinery main-tenance and safety by Dr. Von Jarrett, USU Extension Engineer. Dr. Jarrett demon-strated the use of the Dynometer for im-proving tractor ef-ficiency and hor-sepower. A dinner of four, six foot, long hoagies followed the program.
