Show Phil Jones Clan Wins Family Title A Payson family that hunts together, gardens, delivers papers, raises horses and cows, digs snow caves, prays and serves their neighbors has been named Utah Valley's Family of the Year. Philip E. Jones of 196 West Utah Avenue, Payson, his wife Joan, and their 10 children were named for the honor by the LDS Church's Utah Valley Area Public Communications Council, sponsors of the month-long Utah Valley Family Month, which concludes this week. Receiving a special award as Honorary Family of the Year was the George Osmond family, whose members were singled out for making a broad, international contribution con-tribution to family solidarity and high moral values. Other finalists were the Jay Smiths Jr. of Mapleton, the Darrell Hadleys of Provo, the Sharon Maynard family of Provo, the Norman Struthers of Provo, and the Glade Daltons of Lehi. The Jones family was selected selec-ted by a group of judges that reviewed more than 50 nominations received from every community in Utah Valley. The Joneses will receive a certificate of honor from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and a special vacation trip to Disneyland and the Grand Hotel. A metallurgical engineer department head at U.S. Steel's Geneva plant, Jones has served for seven years as president of the Payson Stake of the LDS Church, and for four years was a city councilman coun-cilman for Payson. His wife, Joan, has served in the Primary, MIA and Relief Society of the LDS Church. Their children are Julie, 20; Alan 18: Linda, 17; Sue 15; David, 13; Debra, 11; Reed, 8; Gordon, 7; Diane, 5; and Mark, one and a half. Lael Woodbry and Herbert E. McLean, chairman of the Utah Valley Family Month committee, said, "considering that this was the first award of its kind, we were amazed at the repsponse-the number of nominations. But we were even more amazed at the uncommon un-common quality of the families nominated." The Utah Valley Family of the Year contest, the concluding con-cluding event of Utah Valley Family Month, was sponsored by the local Communications Council of the LDS Church. |
