Show Editorial To The Moon !! ! Why is it every time there is a revenue crunch at some level . ol government, some politician, who often is to blame for letting it happen, starts looking for something to ta ? Now, it's beer. We have heard this pitch before in other places in Utah. Tax beer to curb drunk driving. Tax. beer so litter pickup can be funded. Tax beer because we simply need the money. Well, lets get something on the table. Beer drinkers are not a group of littering drunks, the same way wine drinkers are not winos. And we don't see why a person enjoying a beer should have to pay one cent more for taxes on that enjoyment, anymore than a person enjoying a cup of tea should have to pay. Remember what happened in Boston when the tea tax got out of hand? , . If the city is seriously considering taxing glasses, cans, bottles and barrels of beer to raise revenue, the city should forget it. The people who are already forced to do much of their day-to-day shopping for basic living needs in Salt Lake City will begin to haul beer in quantity up the hill. Watch them, it's already being done. And, of course, there is the protest cult. They are the people who don't like being pushed around because they enioy a certain lifestyle. Those people will stop drinking here for the principle of the matter. Word-of-mouth boycotts such as, "Don't drink beer in Park City because you'll be getting extorted," will be just what we don't need in a town that thrives on good PR and outside bucks. A beer tax? Ridiculous. Take it to the moon. V. |
