Show The Women's Room By Kate McCutchan Collie Nolan is a holistic health practioncr reluctant to use the word "healer" in relation to herself. "Mv focus is teaching people to heal themselves. Others can indeed be a catalyst for you. but all change comes from within: all healing is really self-healing. I help create a space where healing can happen, but people are responsible for what they create. Hippocrates practiced holistic medicine. He taught that before you look at the physical, look at how the patient views himself and his relationship to the world- there you will find symptoms of disease." "I give people tools to work with - thev need a little push in the right direction. I know the feeling of power and self-love that results from overcoming a problem yourself is the most powerful medicine there is." "I always knew I'd be a 'healer' or counselor. From the time I was 3 or 4, I became aware that what people said and what they felt were often quite different. I picked up 'vibes' when people walked into a .room, especially emotional ones. I ended up with a lot of stuff to work out on my own concerning trusting what people say. My grandmother taught me as a child to trust my feelings; she taught me that there really was a lot more going on than we normally pick up with our five senses. She and my great - grandmother were known to have psychic abilities." "I began reading everything I could find on parapsychology and reincarnation, but by far the most important aspect of my life has been my luck in attracting excellent teachers to myself: teachers who are experts in their fields." Collie's first such teacher was Joan Morton, a well-known psychic in California. "Joan was teaching psychic development and healing. I went to her for a reading and class. When I walked into her presence, I experienced a moment of incredible energy flowing between us. and I knew I had been drawn to meet her. I worked with her for over a year - my whole life was transformed. I became aware of mv eift and of mv responsibility to use it wisely. 1 was taught to channel energy and to 'heal': the experience turned my ideas of God and happiness upside down." Collie has had other experiences and teachers equally as important to her development. She is fascinated with the power of the mind and has studied counseling, received a certificate in hypnosis, and taught classes on her own. She ai tended Heartwood School in Santa Cruz and has worked with Dr. Mark Kramer, the founder of the first holistic health center to open in California. She studied with Dr. Gerald Jampolsky (author of "Love is Letting Go of Fear") and lived with a Chippewa Indian Medicine man to learn more of the ancient art of self-sufficiency. Her goal is to open a holistic healing center and to ultimately "bridge the gap" between holistic medicine and traditional medicine. She is currently practicing in her home; prospective clients mav call her there at 649-1238. "Life is so simple, really," she smiled at me. "When we're happy, it's life's message that we're doing something right. When we're sick, we must take the time to lay down and look at our lives and what we must change. We all need to learn lessons; it doesn't really matter how we learn - there are .many paths up the mountain." |
