Show EDITORIAL In her acceptance speech during the recent Emmy Awards, television actress Nancy Marchant talked about her award-winning performance as a stroke victim. "Doing that part." she said, "reminded me of how really fragile we all . are." Saturday's needless tragedy that took the life of a 2 1 -year old Park City man is a reminder of that fragility. Park City is a beautiful place to live no doubt about it--but you have to stay alive to enjoy it. Each of us has the individual responsibility to take care of ourselves. Unfortunately, it's too easy to forget that there are others who would be deeply affected if anything were to happen to any one of us. Acting Park City Police Chief Joseph Offret noted that alcohol, driving too fast, and a lack of safety precautions contributed to the weekend tragedy. He said those same three factors in the same order contribute to the majority of fatal accidents in Utah. Park City is no exception. He also said that Park City is the home of a good number of motorcycle and dirt bike riders because of its rural countryside. This could mean that a number of Parkites may learn something that at least one victim didn't. Offret said "it doesn't matter what the time of day is. In fact, we have a large number of DUI's (Driving Under the Influence) happening in early daytime hours during the summer." So. it boils down to this. It was early in the day. there were no special road hazards or sharp turns - there was, as Chief Offret put it, "no one to blame but Viehweg himself." We agree with this week's letter to the editor, it was "an expensive lesson to learn" and we hope others will consider the price very carefully. . . V. ... .4 a. i - ' ,-;.. 7r , , 1 - .' . : r |
