Show . -. . . Parkites returned to work this week with an uncharacteristic uncharac-teristic droop. It had been a tough weekend which started way back on Wednesday. There was the sign-on celebration for Park City 's Community Radio Station which went on to burn the midnight oil. Then it was the Fourth with parades, races, rodeos and the Muckers jubilant triumph over their arch rival, Dead Goat. And still there was the weekend to be filled. with visiting and treks into thewilderness and chores and countless projects. pro-jects. It picked up a momentum all its own and left almost everyone feeling slightly relieved Monday morning to return to a normal routine. In the surrounding valleys thunderheads danced along the ridges, whimsically watering wa-tering gardens here and there and leaving adjacent ones untouched. Cloud banks softened the sunlight a relief to the overindulgent and sealed in a veil of healing humidity. In between be-tween spot showers, we dashed out to the garden to . rescue a handful of freshly ripened strawberries from a band of Magpie marauders. , In past years, we hay lost j" most of our berries to i the i , birds but U His' -yea we borrowed an 1 old Yankee tradition and installed a scarecrow of intimidating proportion. He , has thoroughly , confused our dedicated guard, dogs and has been doing ajn admirable job of hoodwinking the winged bandits. In Oakley too, there as a " sigh of relief as Monday rolled around. Record breaking break-ing crowds overflowed existing exist-ing parking lots and lined the highway to share in the town 's famous Fourth of July celebration. In deference to the crowd, the parade only covered the route up to the corner of Center and Main once. Last year, they delighted deligh-ted spectators with a return trip and though we were sorry to see that they had become top professional for a rerun it was clear that they were wisely avoiding a potentially hazardous traffic jam. Anyway the tourists had really come to see the rodeo. Even Governor Matheson couldn 't resist what has come to be known as one of the most professional rodeos on the Rocky Mountain , circuit. We had planned to mosey over to the stands at about 7:30 but when friends from out-of-town began arriving at 6:00 already anxious to find good seats we realized that we had miscalculated. In fact, the stands were sold out by 7:00 and hundreds of latecomers , were turned away. Those who gained admission, however, and ., even those who watched from surrounding rooftops were not disappointed r Clegg's spirited stock :was a 'fine match for the prob and all ended well with the traditional fireworks display and a town dance. This week we will devote to quieter pursuits. We will admonish ourselves to get back to work, all the while -knowing that we would do it all over again next weekend if we had the chance. NC |
