Salt Lake City: Honorable Mention- "Strength2 Over Judges of the 22nd annual Original Writing Competition Competi-tion sponsored by-the Utah Arts Council were high in their praise of the quality of writing being done in Utah', according to Dr. Edward L. Hart, chairman of the Council's Coun-cil's Literary Committee, who today released the names of the winners of the nine separate contests. The judges of the contests, : who are among the top professionals in the country in their fields, described many of the entries not only as publishable, but as crying out for publication. And not just the winners Many entries that were awarded no , prizes were of such high f. .. quality that they would have won in less prestigious Y contests, and , many will . eventually find publishers. , y According to Dr. Haii, an : impressive; number , of win-. win-. ners of previous contests , have ended up in print. More Utah writers than ever become its reputation, it is considered now by most who enter as the top literary event of the year. The addition last year of a $5000 -publication prize has,enhan-; ced the interest. The publication publica-tion prize is awarded to assist with the publication of the best book-length , winner of the regular contest; since -the purpose of the contest is not just to pass out prizes' but to stimulate the production and publication of works that will enhance the value of literature in the state. The 354 works entered in this year's contest were distributed as follows: novel, 1 8; book-length collection of short stories, 22; serious poetry, 75: long poem or group of poems on a related theme, 52; light verse, 27; individual short story, 87; juvenile book, 25; young adult book, 9; and magazine article, 39. Entries in the contest come from all over the state and the winners have a good geographical distribution as well, including includ-ing Lewiston, Orem and HeberCity.
